Cresemba Information:

Cresemba is a drug that utilizes isavuconazonium sulfate, the prodrug of isavuconazole, an azole antifungal drug. It kills and prevents the spread of fungal infection of aspergillosis and mucormycosis. As with most antifungal medications, it is imperative that the type of fungus causing the infection in the patient is identified before prescribing drugs to provide an accurate prescription that will lead to an effective treatment.

Cresemba is most often taken by capsule. It is initially given in a loading dose every 8 hours for 48 hours. Administer the medicine thereafter once daily as a maintenance dose. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions exactly. Take capsules with or without food. Do not crush, chew, open, or dissolve the capsules, and be sure to swallow them whole.

Before taking Cresemba, tell your doctor if:

  • You have liver disease
  • You have a heart rhythm disorder
  • You have a history of allergic reaction to antifungal medicine, including such medications as fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole, or voriconazole
  • You have allergies to food, medication, or other substances
  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing

Use of Cresemba has exhibited the occasional presence of common side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, swelling in your arms or legs, back pain, cough, trouble breathing, and abnormal liver function tests. Get help from a medical professional if you begin to notice liver problems, low potassium, or a severe skin reaction.

If you miss a dose of Cresemba, the best approach is to consult with your physician about the next steps to take.

Keep Cresemba stored at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not remove capsules from their original blister pack, and keep any moisture-absorbing preservatives with it in its container. Do not include Cresemba in a daily pill organizer.

You may begin to experience diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, hot flashes, joint pain, anxiety, feeling restless, numbness or tingling, trouble concentrating, dry mouth, strange sense of taste, oral numbness, and fast or pounding heartbeats. Seek emergency medical attention or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

You should not use Cresemba if you have a genetic heart rhythm disorder called Short QT Syndrome. Your doctor may recommend certain dietary restrictions or changes while you are on a regimen with Cresemba. Be sure to follow all instructions provided by a doctor, including dosing instructions and any therapeutic lifestyle changes necessary for the drug to work.

Cresemba is the brand name of the generic isavuconazonium. The drug is not sold under any additional brand names, so no exact alternatives are available. To get patient assistance for your Cresemba prescription, download or print a price-cutting Cresemba coupon from HelpRx today.
