Crinone Information:

What is Crinone?

Crinone is a medication, in gel form, of the progesterone class and is prescribed to help improve fertility in women whose progesterone levels are too low. It works by causing changes to the uterine lining, making it easier for eggs to attach there in the earlier stages of pregnancy. It is also used to help women with their menstrual periods who lack progesterone but have not reached menopause and to treat endometriosis.

How do I take Crinone?

Crinone is prescribed in either a 4 percent or 8 percent concentration, both of which come in a single use, prefilled applicator. When treating secondary amenorrhea, the 4 percent dosage is administered vaginally, every other day, up to six doses. If there is no response, the dosage can be increased to the 8 percent strength, every other day, up to six doses. As a component of assisted reproductive technology, the 8 percent concentration is applied in 90mg doses on a daily or twice daily basis, depending on patient profile. Use Crinone only as directed.P

Before taking Crinone, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to progesterone or any of the ingredients in Crinone
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements. Provide your doctor with a complete list of all medications

  • You have, or have had, heart, liver, or kidney disease

  • You have a problem with fluid retention or weight gain

What are the possible side effects of taking Crinone?

Some individuals have reported side effects after using Crinone, some more severe than others. Less severe side effects include breast swelling or tenderness; mild nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, constipation, bloating, vomiting; dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue; increased urination; joint or muscle pain; diminished sexual desire; painful sexual intercourse; vaginal or rectal pain; and vaginal discharge, itching or burning. If any of these conditions persists or worsens, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include a breast lump, symptoms of a heart attack, pain or swelling in the legs, flu-like symptoms, sudden headache, shortness of breath, vision problems, loss of balance, speech problems, swelling of the hands or feet, symptoms of depression, allergic reaction (swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, tongue, hives, rash, itching, or difficulty breathing or swallowing).

What if I forget to take a dose of Crinone?

If you miss a dose of Crinone, take it as soon as your remember and are able. Do not increase the quantity applied or take multiple doses to make up for the one that was missed.

How do I store Crinone?

Keep Crinone tightly sealed in its original packaging, away from the extremes of temperature and humidity and out of the reach of children. Do not allow the medication to freeze. Dispose of expired or unused doses according to the recommendations of a pharmacist.
