What is dapsone?

Dapsone, a leprostatic drug, is an anti-infective medication prescribed to treat dermatitis herpetiformis and leprosy. It may also be used to treat other skin conditions.

How do I take dapsone?

Dapsone medicine is administered in tablet form and is taken once daily or three time a week, depending on dosage strength, the patient’s medical profile, and specific need. Do not crush, split, or chew the tablet. Continue taking it for the duration of the prescription or until your doctor approves stopping the dapsone medicine.

Before taking dapsone, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to dapsone, sulfa drugs, naphthalene, nitrofurantoin, phenylhydrazine, niridazole, primaquine, or any of the ingredients in this medication
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking amino benzoic acid, aminobenzoate potassium, clofazimine, rifampin, didanosine, pyrimethamine, probenecid, or trimethoprim
  • You have, or have had, liver disease or anemia.

What are the possible side effects of taking dapsone?

Some people have reported side effects after taking their dapsone medicine. Less severe symptoms include an upset stomach or vomiting. However, if these persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate dapsone patient assistance include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), unusual bruising, fever, sore throat, or symptoms of jaundice.

What if I forget to take a dose of dapsone?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of the dapsone drug, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store dapsone?

Keep dapsone tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on dapsone?

If an overdose of the dapsone drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for patient assistance.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking dapsone. This medication may make your skin sensitive to sunlight; avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and wear protective clothing.
