Demerol Information:

What is Demerol?

Demerol (meperidine hydrochloride) is an opioid analgesic drug, meaning it is a narcotic pain medication related to morphine. It's prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain by altering the way your central nervous system senses pain. It is most often prescribed as pills, though it is available as an injection from medical personnel and may be available as an oral solution.

This medication can be habit-forming; however, you should not discontinue taking Demerol pills out of fear of mental or physical dependence. Suddenly stopping your medication may cause withdrawal effects.

How do I take Demerol?

Always take this medication exactly as prescribed, and never take more than prescribed or for longer than prescribed. As you prepare to discontinue Demerol medication, your doctor will instruct you on how to reduce your doses.

When taking Demerol pills, they are often prescribed as 1 pill taken by mouth ever 3 to 4 hours daily. Do not crush, break, or chew your pills, and do not try to take this medication by inhaling or injecting it, as it can be fatal.

If you've been prescribed the oral solution, only take this liquid orally. Use a dose-measuring cup or spoon to ensure you do not get too much or too little.

Before taking Demerol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are an addict or have a history of substance dependence, especially alcoholism.
  • You have any breathing problems, including asthma or lung disease or disorder.
  • You have any medical allergies.
  • You have used MAOIs of any kind in the past 14 days.
  • You have or have a history of mental illness, or are taking any medications for mental illness.
  • You are malnourished, ill, or debilitated.
  • You have sickle cell anemia.
  • You have or have a history of disease or disorder in your adrenal gland, gallbladder, kidney, liver, or thyroid.
  • You have a physical condition that restricts your breathing in any way (e.g., a spine curvature).
  • You have or have a history of head, brain, or spinal injury or disease, including tumors.
  • You have stomach or intestinal blockage.
  • You have difficulty urinating.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed, as it can harm your child.
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs, medications, supplements or vitamins, including other narcotic medications, antianxiety medications, antidepressant medications, anticonvulsants, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, or anything that makes you feel sleepy or otherwise slows your breathing.

What are the possible side effects of taking Demerol?

Some side effects can be severe and require immediate medical attention. These include: seizures, tremors, or other movements you can't control; confusion, agitation, or other changes in mood; feeling as though you may pass out; swelling in your lips, tongue, throat, or other parts of your face; hives; severe sleepiness; difficulty breathing or slowed/weak breathing; slowed heartbeat.

Common Demerol side effects include: headache, increased sweating, dizziness or drowsiness, and nausea and vomiting. These do not need medical attention unless they persist or worsen.

What if I forget to take a dose of Demerol?

Never take extra Demerol medicine to make up for a missed dose, so skip your missed dose if it's almost time for your next dose.

How do I store Demerol?

Demerol pills should be kept at room temperature and away from excess moisture and heat (e.g., a bathroom). It should be kept where other people, especially children, cannot get it.

Symptoms of overdose may include: fainting, pinpoint pupils, muscle weakness, severe drowsiness, slowed or stopped breathing, slowed heart rate. Seek immediate emergency medical assistance if you suspect an overdose.

Warnings

Do not suddenly stop taking Demerol medicine, as it will cause withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor about how to step down your doses when it's time to discontinue taking it.

Do not try to take this medication any way other than prescribed. Trying to inhale or inject your medication will lead to death.

Demerol can affect your breathing, slowing or even stopping it, especially when first beginning to take it or when your dose is adjusted. This occurs more often with the elderly, those who are debilitated, or the ill or malnourished.

This medication can cause drowsiness and affect your ability to react. Do not perform any potentially hazardous tasks (e.g., driving) until you know how your body will react to it.

Consult your doctor before you take any other medications or supplements that can cause sleepiness or slowed breathing. Drinking alcohol while taking Demerol can exacerbate dangerous side effects and even be fatal.
