Diastat Information:
What is Diastat?
Diastat is a brand of rectal gel that contains diazepam, a benzodiazepine drug that is better known as Valium. Diazepam is used to control anxiety and certain types of seizures. When administered rectally, diazepam acts quickly. It works by acting on GABA receptors and potentiates the neurotransmitter GABA which has a relaxing effect on the central nervous system.
How do I take Diastat?
This medication should only be used as needed. Diastat comes in an applicator device called AcuDial ™. Your doctor will help you and/or your caregiver identify signs or events that signify the onset of a seizure that can be treated with Diastat. Your doctor will show you exactly how to administer Diastat using the AcuDial™ applicator. The cap should be removed from the tip of the applicator and then inserted into the lubrication pack that comes with it. The patient should lay on their side with their top leg forward and the applicator should be slowly inserted into the rectum. Remove the syringe and hold the buttocks closed while counting to three. The applicator should later be rinsed to remove any remaining gel and discarded.
Before taking Diastat, tell your doctor if:
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant.
- You have narrow angle glaucoma.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Diastat.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have trouble breathing due to asthma or other difficulties.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs or herbal supplements, especially medications that are depressants or sedatives or those that affect the central nervous system.
What are the possible side effects of taking Diastat?
Side effects from using Diastat include dizziness, drowsiness and diarrhea. This medication can cause unsteadiness, and it is best to lie down until the effects of the medication have passed. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that you should tell your doctor about immediately include hallucinations, slow or shallow breathing, slurred speech, anxiety or restlessness and allergic reactions.
What if I forget to take a dose of Diastat?
Diastat is used on an as-needed basis only.
How do I store Diastat?
Store Diastat in its original packaging and keep it at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets and anyone who might abuse it. Be sure that discarded applicators do not still contain medication that a small child or pet could consume.
What happens if I overdose on Diastat?
Overdose on Diastat is unlikely since it comes in pre-measured doses with only two doses in a package. Signs of overdose on Diastat include sleepiness, confusion, slow breathing, slow reflexes and coma. If you think someone has overdosed on Diastat, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing call 911.
Warnings
Diastat should not be used more than five times per month as it can cause dependency and lead to addiction. Because this medication can cause sleepiness and drowsiness, do not drive, drink alcohol, ride a bike or operate machinery until the drowsiness passes. Diastat should not be used on infants under two or on the elderly without a doctor’s consent.
