Dorzolamide-Timolol Information:

What is dorzolamide timolol?

Dorzolamide is a carbonic anyhydrase inhibitor that reduces the amount of fluid in the eye. Timolol is a beta-blocker that decreases pressure inside the eye. As a combination drug containing these two active ingredients, dorzolamide timolol helps control high pressure in the eyes caused by open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

How do I use dorzolamide timolol?

Most patients who need to use dorzolamide timolol will apply one drop to the affected eye(s) twice a day, but follow your doctor’s instructions if he or she has told you differently. Remove contact lenses and wash your hands before using this eye drop medication. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket, and squeeze one drop into your eye while looking up and away. Close the eye for at least two minutes while holding a finger to the corner near your nose to prevent any of the medicine from leaking out.

Before using dorzolamide timolol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are using any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially other eye drops
  • You have narrow-angle glaucoma
  • You have any breathing disorders, such as asthma or COPD
  • You have or have had any heart problems, such as a heart attack or AV block
  • You have kidney or liver disease
  • You have diabetes
  • You have myasthenia gravis (a muscle disorder)
  • You have a thyroid disorder
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

What are the possible side effects of using dorzolamide timolol?

Possible side effects of dorzolamide timolol may include mild burning or stinging after application, temporarily blurred vision, watery or dry eyes, headache, or a strange taste in the mouth. These side effects should go away on their own, but if any become concerning, tell your doctor. See your doctor right away if you have swollen eyelids, eye pain or discomfort, drainage or crusting around the eyes, shortness of breath, sudden weight gain, or fainting. This is not a complete list of side effects, and you should always contact your doctor if you have any conditions that worry you.

What if I forget to apply a dose of dorzolamide timolol?

Administer the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next schedule dose, skip the missed one. Don’t apply more eye drops than you normally would for a single dose.

How do I store dorzolamide timolol?

Store dorzolamide timolol at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly sealed and out of reach of children and pets. Don’t let the dropper tip touch your eye or any surfaces, as this may cause contamination. If you notice that the dorzolamide timolol solution has changed colors, become cloudy, or developed floating particles, discard it and contact your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on dorzolamide timolol?

It is unlikely that you will experience any overdose symptoms when applying dorzolamide timolol to your eyes. However, this medicine can be harmful when swallowed and may cause difficulty breathing, an irregular heart rate, chest pain, muscle weakness, fainting, or seizures. Contact emergency services if you or someone in your home has swallowed some of this solution.

Warnings

Do not use any other eye drops while using dorzolamide timolol, unless your doctor has given you permission. Be careful performing any tasks that require clear vision (such as driving or operating heavy machinery) until you know how this medication affects you.
