Duopa Information:

Duopa is a combination drug that uses carbidopa and levodopa to convert dopamine in the brain in treatment of Parkinson’s disease. As a gel medicine, Duopa is administered surgically through a fusion pump into the small intestine. Duopa helps to relieve the “off-time” symptoms of other Parkinson’s medications. Duopa is infused over a 16-hour period to keep a steady amount of the drug in your system, and additional doses may be added if necessary.

Duopa is only to be administered by a medical professional. You will first require a surgical procedure to create a stoma, or a surgical incision, to allow for special “PEG-J” tube to lead directly into your small intestine. This attaches to the infusion pump that delivers Duopa into your body. The medication comes in a plastic cassette attached to the infusion pump and is dispensed over a 16-hour period.

Before taking Duopa, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a stomach ulcer or a history of stomach surgery
  • You have low blood pressure or a history of fainting spells
  • You experience narcolepsy or a history of falling asleep during the daytime
  • You have a muscle disorder such as myasthenia gravis
  • You have nerve problems that cause numbness or tingling in your hands or feet
  • You have a history of depression, mental illness, or psychosis
  • You have glaucoma
  • You have heart disease, high blood pressure, or a heart rhythm disorder
  • You have used an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days

Certain common side effects include complications from your surgery, swelling around your tube, depressed mood, swelling in hands and feet, increased blood pressure, mouth or throat pain, cold symptoms, and nausea. More serious complications from your surgery may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, severe ongoing constipation, fever, bloody or tarry stools, severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, or pain, swelling, redness, warmth, or oozing around the stoma where the PEG-J tube was inserted. Call your doctor at once if you have the following: severe dizziness, daytime sleepiness, uncontrolled muscle movements, intense urges, hallucinations, unusual changes in mood or behavior, numbness, tingling, or weakness in your hands or feet; depression or suicidal thoughts, chest pain, or an irregular heart rate.

You may need additional medicine to make up for your missed dose. Call your doctor for instructions if your infusion was stopped or your pump got disconnected for two hours or more.

Duopa cassettes should be stored in their original carton in the refrigerator and should not be frozen. Take them out of the refrigerator 20 minutes before use to reach room temperature and protect them from light.

If you overdose on this medication, seek emergency medical attention immediately or call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Some patients using carbidopa and levodopa have fallen asleep during normal daytime activities such as working, talking, eating, or driving. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how Duopa will affect you. Dizziness or severe drowsiness may cause falls or other accidents. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may experience dizziness.

Drinking alcohol with this medicine can cause side effects. Avoid taking iron supplements or eating a diet that is high in protein. Iron can make it harder for your body to digest and absorb carbidopa and levodopa. Talk with your doctor or nutritionist about the best foods to eat while you are using Duopa.
