Erygel Information:

What is Erygel?

Erygel is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat acne. It works by stopping the growth of the bacteria that causes pimples, leading to clearer skin. It also contains alcohol, which helps dry up extra skin oils and keep pores from clogging. This medication comes in 30 and 60g tubes of gel.

How do I take Erygel?

Clean and dry the affected skin, and apply a thin film of Erygel only as often as your doctor has told you to (usually once or twice a day). Spread the gel gently, but do not rub it in. Wash your hands when you are done. To make it easier to remember, apply Erygel at the same times every day. If you haven’t seen any improvements in 6 to 8 weeks, talk to your doctor.

Before taking Erygel, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or any other antibiotics
  • You have any other allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Erygel?

As a topical drug, Erygel may cause some mild skin irritation, including burning, itching, peeling, or redness. These side effects are most common in the first few days of use and typically subside as your body adjusts to the medication. If you have any skin irritation that lasts a long time or becomes bothersome, inform your doctor. Stop using Erygel and contact your doctor right away if you experience severe burning or stinging, signs of a skin infection, worsening of your skin condition, or watery or bloody diarrhea. Get emergency medical help if you experience any signs of a severe allergic reaction.

What if I forget to take a dose of Erygel?

Apply the missed dose of Erygel as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Do not apply more of the Erygel medication than you normally would, since this may increase your risk for skin irritation.

How do I store Erygel?

Keep your tube of Erygel tightly sealed and out of reach of children and pets. Store it in a dry space at room temperature (59-86 degrees Fahrenheit). Due to its alcohol content, Erygel is flammable, and you should always keep it away from high heat and open flame. If you no longer need this topical medication or it has expired, talk to your pharmacist to find out how to safely dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on Erygel?

It is unlikely that you will overdose on Erygel when applying it to your skin, but this medication may be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone in your household has swallowed some of this gel, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.

Warnings

Keep Erygel away from your eyes, nostrils, and mouth (including lips). If you get the gel in any of these areas, rinse with water immediately. Do not use harsh skin products (including products with alcohol, astringents, or lime) or other topical medications unless your doctor has given you permission to do so.

Brand Names

Erygel is a brand name medication. There is a generic version—erythromycin—that works the same way and is typically less expensive. Talk to your doctor to find out if this generic version is an option for you, and if you need the brand name form, remember to get a coupon from HelpRx to help reduce the Erygel price.
