Evzio Information:
What is Evzio?
Evzio is an injection that contains naloxone, an opioid antagonist drug. It works by blocking the effects of opioids on opioid receptors. This reverses the effects of the narcotic drug on the central nervous system. It starts working about two minutes after it is injected and can save the life of someone experiencing an overdose. However, this drug is not a substitute for medical care. If someone is given an Evzio injection, they should still get medical attention as soon as possible. Evzio may not fully restore normally breathing or blood pressure, and the relief from the effects of the narcotic may only be temporary.
How do I take Evzio?
Since someone experiencing a narcotic overdose likely will not be able to administer Evzio for themselves, caregivers or family members should be shown how to administer the injection in the event of overdose. To use Evzio, take the auto-injector out of its case and then remove the red safety guard from the bottom of the injector. Keep your hands and any other part of your body away from the black base of the injector incase the needs should accidentally come out. Place the black base of the injector against the middle of the victim’s outer thigh and then press down firmly and hold for five seconds. The needle will go through jeans or any clothing. The needle will go back into the injector after the medication has been dispensed. Call 911 after administering the injection. The injector cannot be reused. Your Evzio prescription should come with a training injector that does not contain a needle.
Before taking Evzio, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Evzio.
- You are pregnant or breast feeding.
- You have or have ever had heart disease.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs or supplements, especially blood pressure medications.
What are the possible side effects of taking Evzio?
Adverse effects following Evzio injection may include high or low blood pressure, elevated heart rate, fluid in the lungs, labored breathing, sweating, cardiac arrest, coma and death. Patients who are dependent on opioids may experience withdrawal symptoms after receiving Evzio injections, such as fever, body aches, weakness, shivering, nervousness, crying, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps, sneezing and rapid heart rate.
What if I forget to take a dose of Evzio?
Evzio is used only as needed.
How do I store Evzio?
Store Evzio auto-injectors at a temperature between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. This medication should be stored in its case and kept out of reach of young children and pets. This emergency treatment should ideally be kept with the patient, and caregivers should know where to find it at all times. Ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of any used or expired injectors. If the solution inside the injector appears to be cloudy or discolored, it should be replaced.
What happens if I overdose on Evzio?
There is limited information on Evzio overdose. Overdose may result in seizures, high blood pressure, low blood pressure or slow heart rate. It may also cause severe opioid withdrawal symptoms.
Warnings
Because the effects of the narcotic drug may outlast the Evzio injection, emergency care should be sought immediately following the injection. There may also be adverse effects or dangerous withdrawal symptoms that should be monitored.
