Famciclovir Information:
What is famciclovir?
A synthetic acyclic guanine derivative, famciclovir is an antiviral prodrug of penciclovir, and is prescribed to treat several forms of a herpesvirus infection. Specifically, it treats: herpes zoster (also known as shingles), herpes virus cold sores, and recurrent herpes simplex infections of mucous membranes or skin (genital herpes, especially with HIV positive patients).
How do I take famciclovir?
Famciclovir is taken orally and can be taken with or without food. It does not require a special diet. Which type of herpesvirus infection is being treated will determine your necessary dosage, so always follow the directions your doctor has prescribed. Often, the dosing of famciclovir is:
- For shingles, take 1 pill 3 times daily at 8 hours apart for 7 consecutive days, and must be started within the first 3 days of displaying the rash.
- For cold sores, take 1 pill at the earliest sign, such as burning, itching, or tingling.
- For genital herpes, take 1 pill twice at 8 hours apart, and within the 6 hours of your first symptoms. If suppressing genital herpes, take 1 pill 2 times daily for as long as prescribed (usually 1 year).
- For HIV positive patients treating recurrent infections, take 1 pill 2 times daily for 7 days.
Before taking famciclovir, tell your doctor if:
- You’re allergic to famciclovir, Denavir, Famvir, lactose, penciclovir, Zovirax, or any other medications.
- You recently had or plan to have a surgical operation.
- You’re taking or plan to take probenecid, which is used to treat hyperuricemia and gout.
- You are or might be pregnant, or if you plan to breastfeed. Talk to your doctor if you become pregnant while taking famciclovir.
- You’re taking any other prescribed or over-the-counter medications or supplements, especially if they’re for treating herpes.
- You have or may have a hereditary disorder, especially glucose-galactose malabsorption, galactose intolerance, severe lactase deficiency.
- You have a history of immune system disorders (especially HIV or AIDS), kidney disease, or liver disease.
- You have a history of or may have renal disease or impairment, as some doses of famciclovir could cause acute renal failure.
What are the possible side effects of taking famciclovir?
While severe allergic reactions are quite rare, seek medical help immediately if you experience any symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, vertigo, hives, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Other severe reactions may include: jaundice, unusual bleeding or bruising, a change in the amount of urine, peeling or swelling skin, confusion or disorientation, or hallucinations. If you experience severe reactions, or if you experience unusual pain, a tingling in your hands and feet, or numbness, contact your doctor immediately.
Other side effects include: stomach pain, bloating or gassiness; nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, headaches and drowsiness or tiredness. Women may also experience painful menstrual periods.
What if I forget to take a dose of famciclovir?
Never take two doses of famciclovir at the same time, so take your missed dose as soon as you realize you’ve missed it unless you’re supposed to take your next dose in the near future. If there are multiple doses remaining that day, take them at the required time intervals and return to your regular schedule the next day.
How do I store famciclovir?
Keep famciclovir in the container it comes in and ensure it’s closed securely. Keep out of reach of children and pets, and do not store famciclovir anywhere moist or which may experience extreme heat, such as the kitchen or bathroom. Do not take outdated medication.
What happens if I overdose on famciclovir?
Call poison control immediately. If the person taking the famciclovir has either stopped breathing or has collapsed, call 911 immediately.
Warnings
Please remember, famciclovir is NOT a cure for cold sores or herpes, and it does not prevent the spread of herpes virus infection to others. If you’re taking famciclovir to suppress genital herpes, continue taking your medication as prescribed and on time, even if you’re feeling better or have stopped presenting symptoms. Don’t drive until you know how famciclovir will affect you, as it can cause drowsiness. If your illness doesn’t improve, gets worse, or if you have any other questions, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Use with caution when the patient is elderly or a minor under 18 years.
