Flexeril Information:

What is Flexeril?

The flexeril drug is an effective treatment to stabilize injured or strained muscles, reducing or eliminating spasms which can lead to further damage. Flexeril medicine is an FDA approved drug utilized to treat pain during the first two weeks after injury. After an initial peak during the first few days of dosing, flexeril continues to reduce pain but has no shown benefit after two weeks. Flexeril is not useful in treating neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy but has shown promise in pain relief to patients suffering fibromyalgia symptoms. Flexeril is a crystalline tricyclic amine salt that is freely soluble in water and alcohol and works by relaxing the muscles.

How do I take Flexeril?

Flexeril medicine comes in tablet form and in an extended release capsule, both taken by mouth. Typical flexeril pill doses are taken two to four times daily but should not be taken more than three week without talking to your doctor. You should follow your medical professional’s directions on your prescription label and ask either your doctor or pharmacist any questions you may have. Do not take more or less of this medicine, or at different intervals, than your doctor has prescribed.

Before taking Flexeril, tell your doctor if:

  • You have ever experienced an allergic reaction to flexeril medicine.
  • You have any other allergies, whether or not you think they are relevant.
  • You have liver disease.
  • You have overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).
  • You have heart problems (irregular heartbeat, heart block, heart failure, or a recent heart attack).
  • You experience any difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate.
  • You have glaucoma.
  • You are having surgery.
  • You are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant.
  • You are breastfeeding (Drugs similar to flexeril have been shown to pass through breast milk, but there is currently unknown whether flexeril passes through).

What are the possible side effects of taking Flexeril?

Flexeril can cause some serious side effects and, although the following is not a complete list, you should contact your medical professional with any concern of a reaction after taking flexeril pills. You should seek emergency help if you begin to experience an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. You should stop using flexeril and call your doctor immediately if, after taking flexeril, you experience fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeats; chest pain or a heavy feeling in your chest, pain spreading to your arms or shoulder, nausea, sweating, sudden numbness or weakness, a sudden headache, confusion or hallucinations, or just a general feeling of unwell. Other less severe side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, or general tiredness.

What if I forget to take a dose of flexeril?

If you miss a dose of flexeril, take it as soon as you remember, unless you are close to the time for the next dose. If you are close to the scheduled next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your prescribed dosing schedule. Do not double your dose to catch up.

How do I store Flexeril?

Flexeril should be stored in the tightly-closed container in which it came. It should be kept out of the reach of children and maintained at room temperature, away from excess heat, moisture or cold. You should not store flexeril medicines in the bathroom or any place where heat and moisture can reach it.

What happens if I overdose on Flexeril?

Symptoms of a potential overdose of flexeril pills include fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe drowsiness, slurred speech, seizures, mood changes such as confusion or hallucinations. If any of these symptoms occur, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can dial 1-800-222-1222 for your local poison control center, and Canadian residents can call a provincial poison control center.

Warnings

A very serious allergic reaction to Flexeril is rare but can include rash, itching or swelling around the face, severe dizziness or trouble breathing. Should any of these symptoms occur, seek immediate medical attention.
