Fluarix Information:
What is Fluarix?
Fluarix is a vaccine that specifically targets new strains of the influenza virus each year. It works by exposing the body to a small amount of the killed virus. Exposure to the virus helps the body to develop immunity to the disease by creating antibodies that recognize active strains of the flu. Fluarix is unable to treat active infections that have already developed in the body.
How do I take Fluarix?
Administration of Fluarix typically occurs by injection. The vaccine is injected directly into the muscle, where the body will quickly notice its presence and begin developing antibodies to remove it. Influenza becomes most present during the winter months, so most people receive theirs during October or November. The vaccine lasts about 12 months; so be sure to get your vaccination on a schedule you can maintain. The vaccine sometimes causes a low fever which can be controlled with aspirin-free pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
Before taking Fluarix, tell your doctor if:
- You have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder
- You have a neurologic disorder
- You have a history of seizures
- You have a weak immune system
- You have a history of severe allergic reaction to a flu
- You have a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome
- You are allergic to eggs
- You are allergic to latex rubber
What are the possible side effects of taking Fluarix?
Fluarix may cause a mild reaction due to the presence of a virus that includes low fever, chills, mild mood changes, redness, bruising, pain, swelling, lump at the site of injection, headache, fatigue, joint pain, or muscle pain. Be sure to alert a medical professional if you experience severe weakness, an unusual feeling in your arms and legs, lightheadedness, high fever, seizure, or unusual bleeding.
What if I forget to take a dose of Fluarix?
Fluarix does not typically include a dosing schedule as it is only administered once annually. If you have not received a flu shot by October or November, consult with your doctor about what to do.
How do I store Fluarix?
Fluarix is administered in a clinical setting and will be stored by a medical professional. If you have Fluarix stored at home, be sure to keep it at room temperature away from heat and light.
What happens if I overdose on Fluarix?
Because Fluarix is given in a clinical setting, an overdose is highly unlikely. Even at relatively high doses, there is not much evidence of negative effects.
Warnings
Fluarix may not provide protection from the influenza virus in every person. You may also experience flu symptoms due to other strains of the flu that may appear. The Fluarix vaccine will not cause you to become fully sick with the flu virus contained within. Though you may experience flu-like symptoms after taking the vaccine, it is still safer and better for your health to be vaccinated than to be infected with the influenza virus.
Brand Names
Fluarix is the brand name of the influenza virus vaccine. It may also be marketed as Afluria, Flublok, Flucelvax, FluLaval Quadrivalent, Fluvirin, or Fluzone.
