Flumist Information:
What is Flumist?
Flumist is a flu vaccination that comes in the form of a nasal spray. It is a great alternative for kids who are afraid of needles and also for adults who prefer a nasal spray. It starts working in the nose where the flu virus normally enters the body. It is also absorbed into the bloodstream and carried throughout the body’s system to stimulate the immune system to develop antibodies. Flumist contains four weakened strains of common flu viruses and helps prevent the flu during flu season.
How do I take Flumist?
Your healthcare provider will spray one spray of Flumist into each nostril. The vaccine is effective even if you have a runny nose or you blow your nose later. Children and adolescents should not take aspirin for four weeks after having the Flumist vaccine.
Before taking Flumist, tell your doctor if:
- You are wheezing.
- You’ve ever had a dangerous reaction to a vaccine.
- You’ve ever had Guillian-Barre syndrome.
- You have a weak immune system do to immunosuppressants, HIV or any other reason.
- You have heart or kidney problems.
- You are over the age of 49.
- You have diabetes.
- You have lung problems.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are taking any antiviral drugs, aspirin or any other medications.
- You area allergic to any vaccines or eggs.
What are the possible side effects of taking Flumist?
Like a regular flu vaccine, possible side effects from taking Flumist include fever, runny nose, sore throat and mild cold or flu symptoms. If any of these symptoms are severe or you experience any unusual side effects, tell your doctor right away.
What if I forget to take a dose of Flumist?
Only one dose of Flumist is needed.
How do I store Flumist?
Flumist will be stored in the pharmacy or in your healthcare provider’s office. If for some reason you are transporting the vaccine or storing it, it must be kept at a temperature between 35 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit.
What happens if I overdose on Flumist?
Flumist is administered by a healthcare professional and only one dose is prescribed. Overdose is not possible.
Warnings
Children under two have an increased chance of wheezing after having this vaccine. Flumist may not be effective for everyone.
Brand Names
Flumist is also called Flumist Quadrivalent. There are no other brand names or generics available.
