Griseofulvin Information:
What is griseofulvin?
Griseofulvin (also known as griseofulvin microsize) is a type of antifungal medication that is taken orally to treat fungal infections of the skin such as ringworm, athlete’s foot and barber’s itch. It works by binding to keratin (a protein found in skin, hair and nails) and stops fungal mitosis which clears the infection.
How do I take griseofulvin?
Griseofulvin is taken once or twice per day and anywhere from two weeks up to six months depending on the type of fungal infection. Always follow the dosing instructions of your doctor or pharmacist. Take your medication at the same time every day. Make sure you take the entire course of medication as prescribed by your doctor to ensure that all of the fungus is eliminated.
Before taking griseofulvin, tell your doctor if:
• You are allergic to any of the ingredients in griseofulvin pills or solution.
• You regularly drink alcohol.
• You have liver disease.
• You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, especially blood thinners or anticoagulants, cyclosporine, oral contraceptives, phenobarbital or any supplements.
• You have lupus.
• You have porphyria.
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
What are the possible side effects of taking griseofulvin?
Possible side effects from taking griseofulvin include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue and dizziness. If you experience any severe side effects, signs of infection, sore throat, fever or sores in your mouth, notify your doctor immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of griseofulvin?
If you forget to take griseofulvin, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and follow your regular regimen. Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed one, and always take all the medication you are prescribed. This means you may have to add an extra day to your treatment.
How do I store griseofulvin?
Keep griseofulvin pills or solution tightly closed in the container it came in. Protect this medication from light and moisture and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Store at room temperature.
What happens if I overdose on griseofulvin?
There are no reports of griseofulvin overdose. Signs of overdose may include exaggerated side effects. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on griseofulvin, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Do not drink alcohol while taking griseofulvin and avoid exposure to sunlight. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when outside.
