Isoniazid Information:
Isoniazid is used in the treatment of Tuberculosis (TB), either alone or in combination of other drugs. It is also used to prevent TB in people who have come into contact with tuberculosis bacteria.
Isoniazid works by eliminating active bacteria. Since not all bacteria is active bacteria, therapy should be continued for 6 to 12 months.
Isoniazid may be prescribed for other uses. If this is the case, ask your doctor for more information about using this drug to treat your condition.
Isoniazid may come in the form of a tablet, capsule, extended release tablet or syrup. It should be taken by mouth, once a day, on an empty stomach. You should take it one hour before or two hours after a meal. It can, however, be taken with food if it causes you an upset stomach. You should follow all directions on the label, and ask your doctor about anything you don’t understand. It is important to take this medication exactly as directed, without taking more or less than prescribed.
Before using Isoniazid , tell your doctor if:

You are allergic to isoniazid or any other drugs.

You are taking any other prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially acetaminophen (Tylenol), antacids, carbamazepine (Tegretol), disulfiram (Antabuse), ketoconazole (Nizoral), phenytoin (Dilantin), theophylline (Theobid, Theo-Dur), valproic acid (Depakene, Depakote), and vitamins.

You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking isoniazid, call your doctor.
Common side effects may include:

Other, more serious side effects include:

numbness or tingling in the hands and feet

Eye pain

skin rash

fever

swollen glands

sore throat
- stomach pains or tenderness

unusual bleeding or bruising
Generally, you should take your missed dose when you remember it. But, if it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue Isoniazid on your normal schedule. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
Warnings
This medication can cause severe - and in some cases, fatal - liver damage. If you have or have ever had liver disease or a history of alcoholism or injection drug use, you should tell your doctor.
While taking Isoniazid, it is important that you keep all appointments, as you will be frequently checked to make sure your body is reacting to the medication well.
If you experience excessive tiredness, weakness, lack of energy, loss of appetite, upset stomach, vomiting, dark yellow or brown urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes, you must call your doctor immediately.
If you have diabetes and use Clinitest to test for sugar in your urine, you should switch products. Isoniazid can cause false results.
Do not let anyone else take your medication.
