Jadenu Information:

Jadenu is the drug deferasirox, an iron chelator that removes excess iron from the blood. It is prescribed to those who have received a large number of blood transfusions and works by attaching to iron in the body so that it can be removed through feces.

Jadenu is dispensed as a tablet that is taken orally with water. It can be taken without food or with a small, low-fat meal. The dosing regimen will be determined by the medical profile of the patient being treated. Follow the dosing instructions exactly; do not stop taking this medication without notifying your doctor. If you have any questions about this medication, contact your healthcare provider for Jadenu patient assistance.

Before taking Jadenu, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to deferasirox or any of the ingredients in the Jadenu drug
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You have high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome
  • You have low platelet levels
  • You have kidney or liver disease
  • You have severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • You have an infection
  • You have, or have had, ear, hearing, or vision problems

Side effects have been reported by those taking Jadenu. Mild symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, or vomiting. If these appear and persist or worsen, contact your doctor for Jadenu patient assistance. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include decreased urination, swelling in extremities, excessive tiredness, shortness of breath, confusion, symptoms of jaundice, flu-like symptoms, lack of energy, appetite loss, pain in the upper right part of the stomach, unusual bruising or bleeding, vomit that is bright red or looks like coffee grounds, bright red blood in stools, black, tarry stools, signs of an allergic reaction, vision problems, and hearing loss.

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Jadenu, take it as soon as you remember and are able unless it is almost time for your next dose. In this instance, maintain the regular schedule and skip the missed dose. Do not increase the number of pills taken or alter the schedule to make up for the one missed.

Keep Jadenu tablets tightly sealed in their original packaging and out of the reach of children. Store them at room temperature and protect them against high humidity; bathroom storage is not recommended. Discuss with your pharmacist the proper method for disposing of unused or expired doses. Do not flush them down the toilet.

If an overdose of Jadenu has occurred, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or Emergency Services at 911 for help. Symptoms of an overdose include loss of consciousness, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, lack of energy, loss of appetite, pain in the upper right part of the stomach, unusual bruising or bleeding, vomiting, and yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Jadenu can cause liver or kidney failure, gastrointestinal hemorrhaging, and death. The risk of life-threatening side effects is greatest in the elderly. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Jadenu can cause dizziness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms or explosives until its effects are known. If diarrhea or vomiting occurs, drink plenty of fluids to remain hydrated.

Jadenu is the brand name for deferasirox, an iron chelator. It is also marketed as Exjade. However, these cannot be substituted for each other without written medical permission as their strengths and methods of administration are different. To help control Jadenu costs, especially for those who do not have a Jadenu copay card, HelpRx has a Jadenu price-reducing coupon available. It can be quickly downloaded and used to receive savings of as much as 75% on the cost of this medication.
