Junel Fe Information:
What is Junel FE?
Junel FE is an oral contraceptive consisting of two pills: one a combination of estrogen and progestin (ethinyl estradiol, norethindrone), one a ferrous fumarate (non-hormonal, non-therapeutic) placebo. Estrogen-progestin contraceptives prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, causing endometrial atrophy (thinning the lining of the uterus), and increasing the viscosity of the mucus at the cervix.
How do I take Junel FE?
Packets will include 28 pills. There are no off-pill days because during the “off” week you’ll take the placebo pills. The packets will come pre-marked with the week beginning on Sunday, and they’ll also contain stickers to mark the weeks starting with different days if you wish to do so. You can start your medication one of two different ways: start your first packet on Sunday, or start your first packet on the first day of your period.
Take 1 tablet by mouth at the same time of day every day. Continue taking pills even if you experience spotting. As soon as you finish one packet, begin the next packet on your regular dosing schedule without interruption. Oral contraceptives can be used as treatments for other conditions; in these cases, follow your doctor’s instructions exactly.
Before taking Junel FE, tell your doctor if:
- You think you might be pregnant or you are currently breast feeding.
- You currently have or have a history of breast, uterine, or cervical cancer, or any abnormal growths or vaginal bleeding.
- You have or have a history of cardiovascular issues, such as stroke, heart attack, clots, angina, or blood pressure.
- You have or have a history of pancreatic or liver disease or cancer.
- You have any other major medical diagnoses, such as obesity, diabetes, epilepsy, migraines, etc.
- You’ve experienced a yellowing of eyes and skin during pregnancy or previous usages of Junel FE or any other oral contraceptive.
- You smoke.
- Any allergies you have to medications.
- You plan to have surgery or expect to be on bed rest.
- You’re taking any other medications or supplements, including vitamins (especially St. John’s Wort or any antidepressants), as they may interact or interfere with the Junel FE.
What are the possible side effects of taking Junel FE?
Major side effects include: arterial thromboembalism; cerebral hemorrhage or thrombosis; gallbladder disease; hepatic adenomas; hypertension; pulmonary embolism; thrombophlebitis; retinal or mesenteric thrombosis.
Common side effects are: amenorrhea (discontinuation of menstruation) or other changes in menstruation, breakthrough bleeding or spotting, breast changes (enlargement and tenderness), cervical erosion/secretion, changes in vision (possibly associated to corneal steepening or contacts), edema, gastrointestinal issues (bloating or cramping), melasma (skin discoloration), mental and emotional shifts (especially depression), migraines, nausea or vomiting.
What if I forget to take a dose of Junel FE?
If you miss 1 dose of Junel FE, take that dose as soon as you remember it and take your next dose on time. Taking two doses on the same day or at the same time is safe. However, birth control like Junel FE is most effective when taken on time, and missing consecutive doses could result in pregnancy; use an alternate form of contraception for 7 days following the missed tablets and refer to your doctor or pharmacist, or drug pamphlet about how to continue your medication.
How do I store Junel FE?
Keep Junel FE in the container you received it in, as this assists in ensuring you take the right pills on the right days. Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture (such as the bathroom). Keep out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Junel FE?
While no severe reactions are associated with an acute ingestion of Junel FE birth control, even among young children, call your local poison control center for treatment. Effects of overdose may include nausea and withdrawal bleeding.
Warnings
If you have missed doses of Junel FE and do not get your period at the appropriate time, discontinue your medication and talk to your doctor immediately as you might be pregnant. If you miss 2 periods consecutively, regardless of taking your medication correctly or not, talk to your doctor immediately.
Oral contraceptives such as Junel FE do NOT prevent the transmission of STIs (HIV/AIDS, HPV, etc.). Smoking cigarettes while taking Junel FE increases your risk of cardiovascular problems such as heart attack and stroke. Antibiotics may interfere with Junel FE, so discuss your options with your doctor if you are taking them or are about to take them.
