Kayexalate Information:

This medicine is a potassium-removing resin used to treat high levels of potassium in the body.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine is usually given at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. If you will be using this medicine at home, a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use this medicine. Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose. Contact your health care provider if you have any questions. THIS MEDICINE CAN BE TAKEN orally, as an enema, or through a feeding tube, as directed by your doctor. IF YOU TAKE ANTACIDS OR LAXATIVES, ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take them with this medicine. DO NOT take magnesium hydroxide with this medicine. THIS MEDICINE SHOULD BE FRESHLY PREPARED by mixing with water or syrup. Ask your doctor how much water or syrup you should use to mix this medicine. USE THE MEDICINE WITHIN 24 HOURS after you mix it. SHAKE OR MIX WELL before taking a dose. DO NOT HEAT this medicine. It may not work as well. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Do not freeze. Protect from excessive heat. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, contact your doctor.
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking magnesium hydroxide or sorbitol. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking aluminum hydroxide, digoxin, lithium, or thyroxine. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including swelling or fluid retention (edema); congestive heart failure; high blood pressure; kidney problems; dehydration; low blood volume; abnormal blood electrolyte (eg, sodium, magnesium, calcium) levels; a history of constipation, or bowel problems or surgery; allergies; pregnancy; or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are on a low sodium (salt) diet or if the patient is a premature newborn. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have low blood potassium levels; a bowel blockage (obstructive bowel disease); constipation, or if you are at risk for constipation or impaction (eg, a history of impaction, chronic constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, ischemic colitis, previous bowel surgery, bowel blockage); if you have not yet had a bowel movement after recent surgery; or if you have abnormal bowel function. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if the patient is a newborn with decreased bowel movement. Use of this medicine by mouth in newborns is not recommended. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include appetite loss, nausea, upset stomach, or vomiting. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience black, tarry, or bloody stools; change in emotions, mood, or behavior; confusion; constipation; dizziness; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; muscle cramps, pain, spasms, or weakness; seizures; severe or watery diarrhea; stomach pain; swelling of the feet or hands; swelling of the stomach; trouble breathing; trouble thinking or concentrating; or vomit that looks like coffee grounds. AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO THIS MEDICINE IS UNLIKELY, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include confusion; dizziness; irritability; irregular heartbeat; trouble thinking or concentrating; muscle cramps, pain, weakness, or paralysis; or trouble breathing.
DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out. CHECK WITH YOUR PHARMACIST about how to dispose of unused medicine.
