Ketorolac Tromethamine Information:
What is ketorolac tromethamine?
Ketorolac tromethamine is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain reliever (NSAID) that is used as an ophthalmic solution or eye drops to treat ocular pain and inflammation. It works by inhibiting the body’s production of the COX enzyme, which is an enzyme that allows the body to produce prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are responsible for regulating inflammation and sensitizing the body to pain. By cutting off the production of prostaglandins, ketorolac tromethamine is able to control pain and inflammation in the eye.
How do I take ketorolac tromethamine?
If you have had surgery, wait 24 hours after surgery to start using ketorolac tromethamine. This medication is usually taken four times a day. Wash your hands and remove contact lenses before using this product. Then tilt your head back and pull down your lower eye lid with a finger to make a pouch. Squeeze one drop of the medication into the pouch without touching the dropper to your eye or lid. Hold your eye shut and press the tip of your finger to your tear duct for about two minutes so that none of the medication escapes and it is completely absorbed by the eye. If you have been prescribed more than one drop, wait five minutes before applying the second drop.
Before taking ketorolac tromethamine, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic or have a bad reaction to NSAIDs, or you are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication.
- You wear contact lenses.
- You have a history of asthma or bronchospasms.
- You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially blood thinners, other NSAIDs, or corticosteroids.

If you experience signs of allergic reaction, swelling, signs of infection, or serious irritation and redness, stop using this medication and contact your doctor at once.
What if I forget to take a dose of ketorolac tromethamine?
If you forget to take a dose of ketorolac tromethamine, apply the missed dose as soon as your remember it. If it’s almost time for your next application, skip the missed one and continue on your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose of ketorolac tromethamine to compensate for a missed one.
