Klor-Con Information:
What is Klor-Con?
Klor-Con is a mineral supplement that helps increase potassium levels in the blood. It is prescribed to people who have low potassium, whether that is due to a medical condition, a medication, or a prolonged illness with vomiting or diarrhea. A normal level of potassium is necessary for the proper functioning of the cells, nerves, muscles, kidney, and heart.
How do I take Klor-Con?
Klor-Con comes as a tablet that is taken with food and a full glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole, as breaking or crushing it may cause too much potassium chloride to be released at once. Follow any special dietary instructions your doctor gives you. There may be certain foods that you should consume or avoid to help make Klor-Con pills more effective.
Before taking Klor-Con, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to potassium chloride or have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially a diuretic
- You have kidney problems
- You have high levels of potassium in your blood
- You have high blood pressure or heart disease
- You have an adrenal gland disorder (Addison’s disease)
- You have a severe burn or other tissue damage
- You are severely dehydrated
- You have a stomach or intestinal blockage or ulcer
- You have chronic diarrhea
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Klor-Con?
Serious side effects of Klor-Con are uncommon, but some people who take this supplement experience mild nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, or tingling in the hands or feet. If you have any of these side effects and they last a long time or become severe, tell your doctor. You may notice empty pill shells in your stools, but this is not a cause for concern. You should stop taking Klor-Con and contact your doctor immediately if you have any rare but serious side effects, including painful swallowing, muscle weakness, lightheadedness, unusual mental changes, extreme thirst, more frequent urination, or an irregular heartbeat. Get emergency medical attention if you have severe stomach or abdominal pain, black or tarry stools, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
What if I forget to take a dose of Klor-Con?
If you miss a dose, take it with food as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and resume your normal dosing routine.
How do I store Klor-Con?
Store Klor-Con pills in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. Do not keep it in the bathroom, since heat and moisture can negatively affect it. As with all prescription medicines, keep it out of reach of any children or pets in your home.
What happens if I overdose on Klor-Con?
Overdosing on Klor-Con may lead to muscle weakness, confusion, an irregular heart rate, and other serious side effects. Seek emergency medical attention if you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on this supplement.
Warnings
Do not stop taking Klor-Con without talking to your doctor; suddenly stopping treatment with this supplement may make your condition worse. Do not take any other potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium unless your doctor has given you permission to do so.
