Klor-Con M10 Information:
What is Klor-Con M10?
Klor-Con M10 is a prescription form of potassium chloride, a naturally-occurring mineral compound of potassium and chlorine. The body requires potassium to survive, and potassium chloride is often prescribed to treat potassium deficiencies or hypokalemia. Severe hypokalemia can result in respiratory depression from the impairment of skeletal muscle. When a person has hypokalemia, he or she may suffer from muscle weakness, muscle cramping, cardiac arrhythmias, high blood pressure and constipation. Some people that wake up because of leg cramping in the middle of the night may need to take potassium supplements. Potassium chloride is also used to treat skin disorders, gout and kidney stones. This medication works by reducing acidity in the blood which decreases swelling in joints and stops crystallizations from forming in the kidneys. It also increases the availability of oxygen in the blood and skin. Different amounts of Klor-Con M are prescribed according to the severity of the patient’s condition. Klor-Con M10 contains 750mg of potassium chloride. Higher doses can be found in Klor-Con M15 and Klor-Con M20.
How do I take Klor-Con M10?
Klor-Con M10 is an extended release medication that slowly dispenses potassium into the body to avoid the dangerous effects that can result from high levels potassium. Do not crush or chew Klor-Con M10 tablets because this destroys the extended release mechanism. Swallow tablets whole with a glass of water, and take them with a meal. Klor-Con M10 is normally just taken once daily. If taking the effervescent tablets, dissolve them in a glass containing about 4-5 ounces of water. Allow the tablet to dissolve completely before drinking it. This takes about two minutes. Stir the contents and drink quickly. Then add some more water to the bottom of the glass, swirl it around, and consume the remaining contents.
Before taking Klor-Con M10, tell your doctor if:
- You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially other potassium supplements, aldosterone blockers, anticholinergics, potassium-sparing diuretics, or NSAIDs.
- You think you are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication.
