Labetalol HCL Information:

What is labetalol hcl?

Labetalol hydrochloride is an adrenergic receptor blocker and works by blocking alpha and beta receptors, relaxing blood vessels to slow heart rates. By relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate, labetalol hydrochloride improves blood flow and decreases blood pressure.  Either used alone or in combinations with other medications, labetalol hcl affects the responses to nerve impulses in the body, allowing the heart to beat slower and reduce blood pressure and, in turn, increasing the amount of blood and oxygen to the heart. Labetalol hcl has been shown to be an effective treatment for pregnant women in reducing and controlling pregnancy-induced hypertension commonly associated with pre-eclampsia.

Labetalol hydrochloride may also be used to treat angina and tetanus.

How do I take labetalol hcl?

Labetalol hcl is a tablet form medication which is taken by mouth two to three times per day. While dosage must be individualized depending upon the individual circumstances and current health, the recommended initial dosage is 10mg twice daily. After two to three days, the dosage may be modified in increments of 100mg b.i.d. every two or three days, dependent upon the change in standing blood pressure. The typical maintenance dosage of labetalol hcl is between 200mg and 400mg twice daily. Titration increments should not exceed 200mg twice daily. Elderly patients may eliminate labetalol hydrochloride more slowly, resulting in adequate blood pressure control at a lower maintenance dosage relative to the general population.

Before taking labetalol hcl, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant.
  • You are breastfeeding.
  • You suffer from diabetes.
  • You have a history of heart attack or heart disease.
  • You have kidney or liver disease.
  • You suffer from COPD, lung disease, asthma, pheochromocytoma, or thyroid disease.
  • You have angina or chest pain.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs.

What are the possible side effects of taking labetalol hcl?

Regular checkups are very important while taking labetalol hcl, as your doctor will want to confirm that this medicine is working properly and will want to check for any negative side effects. You should contact your doctor immediately if you experience itchy skin, dark urine, loss of appetite, yellow eyes or skin, flu-like symptoms, or stomach pain as these could be signs of damage to your liver. You should also immediately contact your doctor if you experience chest pains or discomfort, dilated neck veins, extreme fatigue, irregular breathing or heartbeat, shortness of breath, swelling in the face, fingers, feet or lower legs, weight gain or wheezing, as these symptoms could indicate damage to your heart.

Additional side effects which may not necessarily need immediate medical attention but should be reported to your doctor include dizziness, indigestion, lightheadedness, nausea, stuffy nose, temporary tingling in your scalp, rash, hives, decrease sexual abilities, mood changes, weight gain, vision changes, or persistent sore throat.

What if I forget to take a dose of labetalol hcl?

If you miss a dose of labetalol hcl, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose.

How do I store labetalol hcl?

Labetalol hcl should be stored in the container in which it was originally dispersed or in another tightly-closed, dark container. It should be kept at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Labetalol hcl should not be frozen and should not be kept in your bathroom. You should keep this medication out of the reach of children, and your pharmacist will advise you how to dispose any unused or expired medications.

What happens if I overdose on labetalol hcl?

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222, and Canadian residents can call a provincial poison control center. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services as 911. Symptoms of overdose include fainting, seizures, severe dizziness or lightheadedness, shortness of breath, or slow heartbeat. Patients suffering overdose should be placed on their backs with their legs raised to improve the blood supply to the brain.

Warnings

Use of labetalol hydrochloride can result in liver damage, which is typically reversible but has resulted in necrosis and death. Congestive heart failure has also been observed in patients taking labetalol hcl, and continued depression of the myocardium in patients with latent cardiac insufficiency can lead to cardiac failure.
