Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride Information:
What is levocetirizine dihydrochloride?
Levocetirizine is a third generation antihistamine with fewer sedating side effects compared to older antihistamines. It was chemically derived from a second generation antihistamine called cetirizine. It is prescribed by doctors to treat seasonal as well as year-round allergies and controls allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, runny nose, watery eyes, and hives or rash due to allergies. Levocetirizine works by selectively blocking H1 receptors. By blocking the effects of histamine, a chemical released as an immune response to an allergy, antihistamine medications are able to control or eliminate allergy symptoms. Levocetirizine dihydrochloride has been shown to reduce asthma attacks by 70% in children.
How do I take levocetirizine dihydrochloride?
Levocetirizine dihydrochloride comes as a tablet or a liquid to be taken orally. This medication usually only needs to be taken once per day in the evening to control allergy symptoms. Normally, children will be prescribed 2.5 mg daily and adults will be prescribed 5 mg daily, but follow instructions given to you by your doctor or pharmacist.
Before taking levocetirizine dihydrochloride, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any medications.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Although levocetirizine causes less drowsiness than some other antihistamines, it may still have a sedating effect for some people. Serious but rare side effects include feeling faint, depression or irritation, fever, stomach pain, nose bleeds, and earache or hearing problems. Report any serious or unusual side effects to your doctor immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of levocetirizine dihydrochloride?
If you forget to take a dose of levocetirizine dihydrochloride, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal schedule. Don’t take a double dose or two consecutive doses to make up for a missed one.
