Locoid Lotion Information:

What is Locoid Lotion?

Locoid Lotion is hydrocortisone butyrate, a topical steroid that reduces swelling, redness, and skin irritation. Hydrocortisone is similar to cortisol, a hormone produced by the body naturally. While there are low-strength hydrocortisone creams that are available over the counter, Locoid Lotion is available by prescription only.

How do I use Locoid Lotion?

Patients prescribed Locoid Lotion should apply a thin layer of the lotion to the affected patch of skin and rub it in gently. It is usually applied twice daily, but always follow your doctor’s instructions if he or she tells you differently. Patients should stop using this medication once control is achieved (usually within 2 weeks and no longer than 4).

Before using Locoid Lotion, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any active or inactive ingredients in this medication, or if you have any other allergies
  • You are using another corticosteroid treatment
  • You are using any other prescription, non-prescription, or herbal products

Side effects of Locoid Lotion medicine are rare, but certain populations, especially younger children, may be at a higher risk for developing reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, which can affect growth rate. Other rare but possible side effects include manifestations of Cushing’s syndrome (a hormonal disorder characterized by weight changes and high blood pressure), glucosuria, and hyperglycemia. In some uncommon cases, patients develop a skin infection, but this can usually be treated with an antibacterial or antifungal agent. If you experience any serious side effects after take the Locoid Lotion medicine, tell your doctor.

What if I forget to apply Locoid Lotion?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember, but do not increase the amount of lotion you normally apply to catch up. If it is almost time for another application, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal routine.

How do I store Locoid Lotion?

Keep Locoid Lotion away from heat, moisture, and light. It should be stored at room temperature (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit) out of reach of pets and children.
