Loestrin FE 1.5/30 Information:

What is Loestrin FE 1.5/30?

The combination of ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone contained in Loestrin FE 1.5/30 changes the behaviors of the female reproductive system. Chiefly, the increase in hormones prevents eggs from being released from the ovaries. It also alters uterine lining and cervical mucus, which makes the journey to fertilization difficult for sperm. Even eggs that manage to be fertilized are largely unable to attach to the uterus. These actions make Loestrin FE 1.5/30 effective as a contraceptive.

How do I take Loestrin FE 1.5/30?

Take the first pill either on the first Sunday after your period begins or on the first day of your period. When starting to use this medication, use a back-up form of birth control such as spermicide or condoms. Take one pill daily with a break of no more than 24 hours. Once your pills run out, begin using your next pack. Make sure you have a filled prescription ready at all times, and don’t skip the 7 “reminder” pills included in each pack. They will keep you in the habit of taking a daily pill once your period begins.

Before taking Loestrin FE 1.5/30, tell your doctor if:

  • You have high cholesterol or triglycerides
  • You are overweight
  • You have high blood pressure or varicose veins
  • You have underactive thyroid
  • You have a history of depression
  • You have gallbladder disease
  • You have seizures or epilepsy
  • You have diabetes
  • You have tuberculosis
  • You have a history of irregular menstrual cycles
  • You have a history of fibrocystic breast disease, lumps, nodules, or have had an abnormal mammogram
  • You have any food or drug allergies
  • You are taking any other medications, vitamins, or supplements

What are the possible side effects of taking Loestrin FE 1.5/30?

Use of contraceptives such as Loestrin FE 1.5/30 may cause minor side effects such as mild nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps, tender or swollen breasts, nipple discharge, freckles or darkening of facial skin, increased hair growth, loss of scalp hair, weight and appetite changes, problems with contact lenses, vaginal itching or discharge, changes in your menstruation, and decreased sex drive. Alert a medical professional if you experience sudden numbness or weakness, sudden severe headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance, wheezing, rapid breathing, coughing up blood, swelling, pain or redness in one or both legs, heavy or painful chest, sweating, general ill feeling, an increase in migraines, upper stomach pain, itching, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet, appearance of breast lumps, or symptoms of depression.

What if I forget to take a dose of Loestrin FE 1.5/30?

If you’ve missed only one pill, take two once you remember. If you miss two pills in the first two weeks, take two pills a day two days in a row. If you miss two pills in the third week, throw away what remains in the pack and start a new pack on the same day. If you miss three pills in any week, throw out the remainder of that pack and start a new pack on the same day, unless you started on Sunday. If you’re a Sunday starter, keep taking pills until Sunday, then throw out the remainder and start a new pack that day.

How do I store Loestrin FE 1.5/30?

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Overexposure to moisture or heat may cause the hormones contained within to lose their efficacy.

What happens if I overdose on Loestrin FE 1.5/30?

An overdose of contraceptive medication could cause severe or permanent damage to the reproductive system. If you believe you may have overdosed, seek emergency medical assistance or call the Poison Control line at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

During the first few months of use, you may experience breakthrough bleeding. Alert your doctor if this bleeding continues through the first three months or is very heavy. Use back-up birth control if you begin to experience severe vomiting or diarrhea. Tell any doctors or surgeons who are treating you that you are using birth control. Visit your doctor regularly for checkups while on birth control pills.
