Lornya Information:
What is Loryna?
Loryna is an oral contraceptive in pill form that combines drosperinone and ethinyl estradiol. It prevents fertilization by preventing the release of eggs, as well as by changing cervical mucus and the uterine lining. It may also be prescribed to women who have premenstrual dysphoric disorder or to help control acne.
How do I take Loryna?
Loryna is an oral contraceptive dispensed in packs of 28 tablets. Begin taking Loryna on the first day of your menstrual cycle or on the Sunday immediately following; if this is the first time taking an oral contraceptive, use an alternative means of birth control for the first seven days. Take the pills at the same time every day to establish a routine; the pills may be taken with food or milk to prevent nausea. The first twenty-one pills are active; the remaining seven are reminder pills. Take all of the tablets in the cycle, in their proper order, before beginning a new pack. Do not stop taking Loryna without first notifying your doctor.
Before taking Loryna, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to progestin, estrogen, or other ingredients in Loryna
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You smoke tobacco
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking folate or potassium supplements, St. John’s Wort, or ginseng;
- You are taking anti-coagulants, ACE inhibitors, HIV protease inhibitors, antifungals, diuretics, angiotensin II antagonists, antibiotics, seizure medication, thyroid medication, or NSAIDs
- You are taking atorvastatin, cholestyramine, zafirlukast, clofibrate, verapamil, pyrimethamine, cyclosporine, nefazodone, temazepam, bosentan, cimetidine, morphine, theophylline, danazol, rifampin, delavirdine, valproic acid, diltiazem, fluoxetine, modafinil, or sulfasalazine
- You are taking other oral contraceptives,
- You have, or have had, blood clots in your lungs, eyes, or legs
- You have, have had, or there is a family history of heart disease, arrhythmia, tachycardia, coronary heart disease, other cardio vascular conditions, obesity, high cholesterol, or breast cancer
- You have, or have had, diabetes, liver disease, or kidney disease
- You have cervical, uterine, or vaginal cancer
What are the possible side effects of taking Loryna?
Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Loryna. Mild side effects include changes to the menstrual cycle, vaginal discharge or itching, weight gain (or loss), swollen or tender breasts, problems with contact lenses, and changes in skin color. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include chest pain, liver disease, symptoms of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), changes in the frequency or severity of migraines, breast lumps, depression, vision problems, disorientation, speech difficulties, or loss of balance.
What if I forget to take a dose of Loryna?
If you forget to take a scheduled Loryna pill, follow the instructions that accompanied your prescription or contact your doctor. Missing a dose puts you at risk for pregnancy; use alternative contraceptive measures for seven to ten days or until the end of the pill cycle. Do not adjust the dosing regimen unless directed by the instructions included in the medication or approved by your doctor.
How do I store Loryna?
Keep Loryna tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired pills according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Loryna?
If an overdose of Loryna is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include vaginal bleeding and severe nausea.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Loryna. This medication does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Smoking tobacco while taking Loryna increases the risk of heart attack, heart disease, and other cardio-vascular problems. Women over thirty-five who smoke should not use this or any form of oral contraceptive. Missing a dose increases the risk of pregnancy.
