Marinol Information:

What is Marinol?

Marinol is the drug dronabinol, a synthetic cannabinoid prescribed to treat the vomiting and nausea from chemotherapy in patients who have had poor results from other medications. It is also prescribed to stimulate appetite and treat weight loss in people with AIDs. It works by affecting the part of the brain that controls appetite, vomiting, and nausea.

How do I take Marinol?

Marinol is administered in capsule form and is taken orally with water, one to three hours before chemotherapy, and then every two to four hours after. No more than four to six doses of the Marinol medicine are taken per day. If this drug is prescribed to increase appetite, the dosing frequency and amount will be determined by a physician and depends on the medical profile of the patient. Swallow the capsules whole; do not crush, break, split, or chew them. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well. Do not stop taking it without a doctor’s permission.

Before taking Marinol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to dronabinol, cannabinoids, sesame oil, or any of the ingredients in the Marinol pills
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking anticoagulants, antidepressants, antihistamines, barbiturates, muscle relaxants, sedatives, sleeping pills, tranquilizers narcotic pain medications, marijuana, or street drugs
  • You are taking medications for anxiety, asthma, colds, irritable bowel disease, motion sickness, Parkinson's disease, seizures, ulcers, or urinary problems
  • You are taking naltrexone, propranolol, scopolamine, theophylline, amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, or methamphetamine, atropine, diazepam, digoxin, disulfiram, fluoxetine, ipratropium, or lithium
  • You have, or have had, heart disease, hypertension, or seizures
  • You have dementia, schizophrenia, or any  mental illness

What are the possible side effects of taking Marinol?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Marinol. Less severe symptoms include anxiety, confusion, dizziness, aural and visual hallucinations, elevated mood, memory loss, nausea, sleepiness, stomach pain, strange or unusual thoughts, sudden warm feeling, unsteady walking, vomiting, or weakness. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing), tachycardia, or seizures.

What if I forget to take a dose of Marinol?

If you forget to take a scheduled dose of your Marinol medicine, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number taken or change the dosing regimen to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store Marinol?

Keep Marinol pills tightly sealed in their original container, out of the reach of children, away from heat, moisture, and direct light and at a temperature between 46 and 59°F; while refrigeration is acceptable, do not allow the medication to freeze. Dispose of any unused or expired capsules according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Marinol?

If an overdose of the Marinol drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include distorted perception of time, constipation, loss of coordination, slurred or slowed speech, difficulty urinating, orthostatic hypotension, drowsiness, extreme tiredness, tachycardia, out-of-body sensations, euphoria, memory problems, mood changes, red eyes, and a heightened sense of awareness.

Marinol may be habit forming; sudden discontinuation may result in withdrawal symptoms. This drug may cause drowsiness or dizziness, impede judgement, cause mood changes, or diminish mental alertness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Marinol. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.
