Medroxyprogesterone Acetate Information:

What is medroxyprogesterone acetate?

Medroxyprogesterone acetate, or MPA, is a synthetic variety of the hormone progesterone. It works by stimulating progesterone and androgen receptors in the body. This medication puts a halt to ovulation and causes the thinning of the endometrial lining. Because of this, medroxyprogesterone acetate is used as a contraceptive and to prevent or treat endometriosis in postmenopausal women. This medication has also been used to treat hormone-responsive uterine cancer and breast cancer. Long-term use (two years or more) of this mediation increases the risk of dangerous side effects such as decreased bone density. In many cases it is better to consider another safer form of birth control if possible.  Medroxyprogesterone acetate has also been used to control sexual urges in convicted sex offenders and as hormone replacement therapy for men undergoing sex changes.

How do I take medroxyprogesterone acetate?

Medroxyprogesterone acetate comes as a pill or as an injection. If you are taking this medication as an injection, it is usually given in your doctor’s office once every three months. The pill is usually taken orally once daily with a glass of water on designated days throughout the month. Follow your doctor’s instructions to treat your particular condition.

Before taking medroxyprogesterone acetate, tell your doctor if:

  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • You have a history of heart, kidney, or liver disease.
  • You have high blood pressure.
  • You have suffered a stroke.
  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.
  • You smoke tobacco products.
  • You have irregular periods.
  • You have diabetes or you suffer from migraine headaches.

  • You have bone density problems or osteoporosis.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially anticonvulsants, corticosteroids, antibiotics, St. John’s wort, barbiturates, rifampin, and bosentan, and HIV medications.
  • You have an unusual or allergic reaction to contraceptives or any of the ingredients in this medication.
  • You have a history of blood clotting or circulatory problems.
  • You have a history of breast, uterine, or other cancer of the reproductive system.

What are the possible side effects of taking medroxyprogesterone acetate?

Side effects from taking medroxyprogesterone acetate include changes in libido, changes in menstrual cycle, retention of fluids, breast tenderness, acne, fatigue, drowsiness, headache, melasma, and changes in weight. If you experience mood changes, unusual bleeding or discharge, pain in your abdomen, chest or legs, severe headache, extreme vertigo, sudden numbness, or any other persistent or unusual reactions, contact your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of medroxyprogesterone acetate?

If you miss a dose of medroxyprogesterone acetate, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. If you’re using this medication as birth control, you may need to use alternative contraception for a few days if you miss a dose. Contact your doctor for advice.

How do I store medroxyprogesterone acetate?

Store medroxyprogesterone acetate in its original container at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children. If you are storing vials of this medication, they must be kept upright.

What happens if I overdose on medroxyprogesterone acetate?

Excessive use of medroxyprogesterone acetate can result in nausea, vomiting, breast pain or tenderness, dizziness, drowsiness, and abdominal pain. If you think you’ve taken an excessive amount of this medication, contact your doctor. If you or someone you know is experiencing a life-threatening side effect such as seizure, change in breathing, or heart rate, call 911.
