What is mercaptopurine?

Mercaptopurine is a chemotherapy drug of the antimetabolite, antineoplastic agent classes prescribed, along with other medications, to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia (also known as acute lymphoblastic or acute lymphatic leukemia). As a purine antagonist, it works by halting the growth of cancer cells. It may also be prescribed to treat other types of cancer, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn’s disease.

How do I take mercaptopurine?

Mercaptopurine is taken orally, once a day, with or without food. The amount and frequency of dosage will depend on the individual’s medical profile. Do not adjust the dosage without approval from your doctor. Continue taking this medication even if you feel well; do not discontinue its use without permission from your doctor.

Before taking mercaptopurine, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to mercaptopurine or any of the ingredients in this medication
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are already taking thioguanine or the mercaptopurine drug to treat your cancer
  • You are taking allopurinol, doxorubicin, trimethoprim, anticoagulants, amino salicylates, or sulfamethoxazole
  • You have, or have had, liver or kidney disease
  • You have an infection

What are the possible side effects of taking mercaptopurine?

Some people have reported side effects after taking mercaptopurine. Less severe symptoms include darkening of the skin, hair loss, nausea, rash, and vomiting. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing); signs of an infection such as fever, sore throat, or chills; diarrhea, loss of appetite, pain in the upper right part of the stomach, pale skin, shortness of breath, swelling in extremities, swelling of the stomach area, unusual bruising or bleeding, weakness, or the symptoms of jaundice.

What if I forget to take a dose of mercaptopurine?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of the mercaptopurine drug, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number taken or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store mercaptopurine?

Keep mercaptopurine tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused pills according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on mercaptopurine?

If an overdose of mercaptopurine is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include appetite loss, diarrhea, nausea, pale skin, shortness of breath, signs of an infection such as chills, sore throat, or fever, unusual bruising or bleeding, vomiting, or weakness.

Warnings

Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking mercaptopurine. Do not receive any vaccinations without medical permission while taking this medication. Those with certain genetic risk factors are at greater risk for developing serious side effects.
