What is mercaptopurine?

Mercaptopurine is a chemotherapy drug of the antimetabolite, antineoplastic agent classes prescribed, along with other medications, to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia (also known as acute lymphoblastic or acute lymphatic leukemia). As a purine antagonist, it works by halting the growth of cancer cells. It may also be prescribed to treat other types of cancer, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn’s disease.

How do I take mercaptopurine?

Mercaptopurine is taken orally, once a day, with or without food. The amount and frequency of dosage will depend on the individual’s medical profile. Do not adjust the dosage without approval from your doctor. Continue taking this medication even if you feel well; do not discontinue its use without permission from your doctor.

Before taking mercaptopurine, tell your doctor if:

What if I forget to take a dose of mercaptopurine?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of the mercaptopurine drug, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number taken or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.
