Methadone HCL Information:

What is methadone HCL?

Methadone HCL, or methadone hydrochloride, is an opioid analgesic drug used to treat moderate to severe, chronic pain as well as to treat addiction to narcotics such as heroin. Methadone HCL has a longer half-life and diminishes pain in the body for longer periods than other opioids. The cost of methadone is also lower than that of other opioids. This medication may be used in a methadone maintenance treatment program or MMT to assist recovering drug addicts. Methadone works well to treat opioid addiction, as it tricks the body into thinking it has received the drug of addiction and diminishes physical dependence. Methadone also blocks the euphoric effects of heroin or morphine so that a patient being treated for addiction will not experience any high if they give in and use the drug of addiction. This discourages use and slowly weans the patient off of dangerous narcotics. Some patients may take methadone for months before overcoming addiction and eliminating the use of opioids altogether.

How do I take methadone HCL?

Methadone HCL is taken orally with or without food. This medication comes as a tablet or a liquid. Usually, liquid methadone costs more than the tablets. If you are taking the oral concentrate, mix your prescribed dose with at least one ounce of a beverage such as water or juice. For treatment of moderate to severe pain, methadone HCL is usually taken every 4-12 hours. For treatment of addiction, doses are prescribed by a doctor according to the needs of the individual. Your doctor will adjust dosages throughout treatment. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will gradually reduce your doses.

Before taking methadone HCL, tell your doctor if:

  • You are taking other medications, vitamins or supplements, especially St. John's wort, antidepressants or other medications for mental disorders and anxiety, tranquilizers or sleeping pills, HIV medications, diuretics and laxatives.
  • You are allergic to methadone or any other medications.
  • You have or have ever had asthma or other breathing problems, or a blockage in your intestines.
  • You have or have ever had a head injury, brain tumor, a stroke,  irregular heartbeat, urethral stricture, enlarged prostate, or any other condition that causes difficulty urinating, Addison's disease, mental illness, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, scoliosis, sleep apnea, or low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood.
  • You have a history of thyroid, heart, liver, or kidney disease.
  • You have a history of drug or alcohol abuse.
  • You use tobacco products.
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

Methadone HCL may make you drowsy. It is not advisable to drive a car or operate heavy machinery while taking this medication. Avoid consumption of alcoholic beverages while taking methadone; it may increase dangerous side effects. This medication may cause dizziness. To avoid this, get up slowly from a reclining position.

What are the possible side effects of taking methadone HCL?

Side effects from taking methadone hydrochloride include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, decreased libido, dry mouth, nausea or vomiting, constipation, changes in mood, irregular menstrual cycle, sweating and flushing, loss of appetite, swelling of hands and feet, changes in sleep patterns.

Serious side effects include seizures and allergic reaction. These are not all the possible side effects from taking methadone. Call your doctor if you are experiencing unusual or persistent side effects.

What if I forget to take a dose of methadone HCL?

If you are taking methadone HCL regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of methadone.

How do I store methadone HCL?

Store methadone HCL tightly closed in the container it came in out of reach from children and pets. Store this medication between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit in a dark, dry place. Use caution if storing this medication around those who are prone to drug addiction. Do not share your medication with anyone else.

What happens if I overdose on methadone HCL?

Overdose on methadone HCL may be fatal. Signs of overdose include extreme drowsiness, weak or limp muscles, cold, clammy skin, shallow breathing, pinpoint pupils and coma. If you or someone you know has overdosed on methadone, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, contact 911 emergency services.

Warnings

Avoid alcoholic beverages when using methadone. Alcohol can further depress the respiratory system and can be a dangerous combination.
