Methylphenidate HCL Information:

What is methylphenidate HCl?

Methylphenidate HCl is a psychostimulant drug that is primarily used to treat ADHD. It is also sometimes used as a day treatment for narcolepsy. Methylphenidate HCl works to stimulate the central nervous system by increasing the availability of norepinephrine and dopamine available in the brain. The causes of ADHD are still not fully understood, and so the mechanism of action of this medication to treat the condition is not completely clear. It is believed that those who suffer from ADHD have lower levels of dopamine and methylphenidate helps by increasing the amount of dopamine available in the synapse. Therapy and lifestyle changes are recommended in combination with drug treatment.

How do I take methylphenidate HCl?

Methylphenidate HCl comes as a tablet or an oral solution. Your doctor may increase or decrease your dosage to figure out a level that works for you. The average dose is between 20-30mg a day for adults and 10-15mg for children, but more or less may be required depending on the individual. Methylphenidate HCl is usually taken 2-3 times a day. Follow your doctor’s instructions for your condition. This medication should be taken 30-45 minutes before a meal. The last dose should be taken before 6:00 pm to avoid complications falling asleep. If using the oral solution instead of the tablets, make sure the dose is measured with a device that is for medicine and not a household kitchen item. Treatment with methylphenidate should be routinely stopped to check for improvements, especially in children. Many children’s symptoms of ADHD will stop or improve after puberty.

Before taking methylphenidate HCl, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a history of suicide in your family.
  • You have a history of drug or alcohol abuse.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • You have an overactive thyroid.
  • You have high blood pressure or heart problems.
  • You have a mood disorder, experience hallucinations, or have another mental illness.
  • You have experienced seizures.
  • You have glaucoma or liver disease.
  • You have experienced ticks or involuntary movements or have a history of Tourette’s syndrome in your family.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially antidepressants, stimulants such as amphetamines, blood pressure medications, anticonvulsants, other drugs for ADHD or other mental disorders, procarbazine, and warafin.
  • You have trouble swallowing or have a history of gastrointestinal blockage.

What are the possible side effects of taking methylphenidate HCl?

Side effects from taking methylphenidate HCl include nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, change in libido, dizziness, sweating, weight loss, nervousness, insomnia, and blurred vision. Serious side effects include rapid, pounding, or irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, aggression, seizures, prolonged erection, hallucinations, motor ticks, suicidal thoughts, severe headache, signs of rash or infection, bruising easily and feeling faint. Report any of these serious side effects to your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of methylphenidate HCl?

If you forget to take a dose of methylphenidate HCl, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store methylphenidate HCl?

Store methylphenidate HCl tightly closed in its container at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets and protect it from light and moisture.

What happens if I overdose on methylphenidate HCl?

Children and adults with a cardiovascular condition or problem should reconsider treatment with methylphenidate HCl and other stimulants. Sudden death, stroke, and heart attack have occurred.
