Metoprolol Tartrate Information:

What is metoprolol tartrate?

Metoprolol tartrate is a beta blocker, specifically a selective beta-adrenoreceptor blocker which is used to treat or prevent heart attacks, as well as to treat hypertension, supraventricular tachycardia, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, and angina. It works by relaxing blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, and slowing heart rate in order to improve blood flow. It's available as tablets or injections in either standard release (Lopressor brand) or extended release (Toprol XL).

It is not intended for anyone under the age of 18.

How do I take metoprolol tartrate?

Always take this medicine as instructed, and do not take a higher dose or take it for longer than prescribed. Your doctor may adjust your dosage based on your tolerance or to increase efficacy. Try to take your medication at the same time of day every day in order to ensure the best results.

Both standard and extended release tablets should be taken by mouth with or just after a meal. Swallow your pills whole, and do not crush, break, or chew them before swallowing. Some Toprol XL tablets may be cut in half if you are instructed to do so by your doctor.

Injections of metoprolol tartrate medicine are usually administered only by medical personnel. It will come as ampules and is administered intravenously.

Remember to continue taking this medication even if you feel well, as suddenly discontinuing metoprolol tartrate can worsen your condition.

Before taking metoprolol tartrate, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or you plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.
  • You are allergic to other beta blockers (e.g., atenolol, propranolol).
  • You have or have a history of kidney, liver, or thyroid disease or disorder, including diabetes.
  • You have or have a history of adrenal gland tumors.
  • You have serious circulation problems (e.g., Raynaud's syndrome).
  • You have or have a history of pulmonary problems or disorder, including asthma, COPD, and sleep apnea.
  • You have or have a history of certain heart problems, including: congestive heart failure, heart beat slow enough to cause fainting, heart block, sick sinus syndrome, severely slow heart rate.
  • You will have difficulty taking this medication at the same time every day for any reason.
  • You are planning to have surgery.
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, medicines, supplements, or vitamins, including: blood pressure medications, certain antidepressants, antifungals (especially for ergot), mental health drugs, or MAOIs.

What are the possible side effects of taking metoprolol tartrate?

Common side effects of metoprolol tartrate include: confusion or memory problems, difficulty sleeping (e.g., insomnia, vivid nightmares), feeling tired, mild dizziness, a mild rash with itching, or diarrhea.

However, some metoprolol tartrate side effects are severe and require immediate emergency medical assistance. These include: very slow heartbeat, feeling cold in your hands and feet, hives, feeling extremely lightheaded or as though you may pass out, fainting, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, swelling in your face or lips, swelling in your tongue or throat, rapid weight gain or swelling.

What if I forget to take a dose of metoprolol tartrate?

Never take extra medication to make up for a skipped dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose of metoprolol tartrate. Otherwise, you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.

How do I store metoprolol tartrate?

Store metoprolol tartrate medicine at room temperature and away from excess moisture and heat (e.g., a bathroom).

What happens if I overdose on metoprolol tartrate?

Symptoms of a metoprolol tartrate overdose may include: swelling in the hands and feet, swelling in the lower legs and ankles, fainting or severe dizziness, difficulty breathing or swallowing. If you suspect an overdose, call your local poison control center or seek emergency medical assistance.

Do not start or stop other medications without consulting your doctor while taking metoprolol tartrate.

Brand Names

There are two brand names for metoprolol tartrate medicine available on the market - Lopressor (standard release) and Toprol XL (extended release). However, you should be careful not to confuse them with metoprolol tartrate combination medications, such as Lopressor HCT (combines with hydrochlorothiazide). Brand names can obviously start to become expensive, especially with ongoing maintenance dosing. Buying generic means that the cost of metoprolol tartrate is much more feasible, however, you can increase those savings by utilizing our free metoprolol tartrate coupons.
