What is MetroGel-Vaginal?
MetroGel-vaginal is an antibacterial gel that is made to be inserted into the vaginal. It contains an antimicrobial medication called metronidazole. It is effective against amoebas, giardia, protozoa and other microscopic organisms. It works by stopping nucleic acid synthesis in microbial cells.
How do I take MetroGel-Vaginal?
MetroGel-Vaginal is usually applied once or twice daily for five to twenty days. Your doctor will prescribe the right amount based on the type of infection you have. To use MetroGel, fill one of the applicators provided and insert it into the vagina. Release the medication and remove the applicator. Dispose of the applicator after using. Wash your hands before and after use. This medication works best when it is used before going to bed or if you lie down for a period of time after applying it. Wear a panty-liner to prevent stains on clothing.
Before taking MetroGel-Vaginal, tell your doctor if:
· You are allergic to any medications or any of the ingredients in MetroGel.
· You have liver disease or a blood disease.
· You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
· You have a disease of the central nervous system.
· You have Crohn’s disease.
· You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, including blood thinners or antibiotics.
What are the possible side effects of taking MetroGel-Vaginal?
Potential side effects from using MetroGel-Vaginal include dizziness, diarrhea, stomach cramps, vaginal itching or burning, discharge, nausea and a strange taste in the mouth. If any of these side effects are serious or if your symptoms worsen, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Serious side effects that you should tell your doctor about at once include pain during urination, fainting, seizures, negative mood changes, tingling sensation in the hands or feet, fever or signs of another infection.
What if I forget to take a dose of MetroGel-Vaginal?
If you miss a dose of MetroGel-Vaginal apply the missed dose as soon as you have time to lie down for a while. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Do not apply a double dose to compensate for a missed one. Always use all of the medication prescribed to ensure the infection clears and does not return. This may mean adding another day or days to your treatment if you have missed doses. Ask your doctor.
How do I store MetroGel-Vaginal?
Store MetroGel-Vaginal in the tube with the cap tightly closed. Keep the medication at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not allow the medication to freeze.
What happens if I overdose on MetroGel-Vaginal?
There are no reports of overdose on MetroGel-Vaginal. If you think you are using too much or experiencing severe side effects, tell your doctor. If someone accidentally swallows MetroGel, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
