Mexiletine Information:

Mexiletine is a medication that affects your heart rate by blocking certain electrical signals. By blocking signals that can cause an irregular heartbeat, it helps regulate heart rate and reduces the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots. It is primarily prescribed to treat a serious type of irregular heartbeat, but it is also sometimes prescribed to treat nerve problems caused by diabetes.

Your doctor will determine your dose based on your condition and may sometimes change your dose based on your response to treatment, so follow all dosing instructions carefully. Take each mexiletine dose with a full glass of water. You may take this medication with food if you are prone to stomach upset. It’s important to take this drug on a regular schedule; skipping doses or stopping your dosing regimen altogether could cause your heart condition to worsen.

Before taking mexiletine, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially other heart rhythm medicines
  • You have a serious heart condition, such as AV block
  • You have liver disease
  • You have epilepsy
  • You have a weakened immune system
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

Mexiletine may cause mild dizziness, upset stomach, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, tremors, coordination problems, or blurred vision. If any of these side effects persist or become bothersome, tell your doctor. Call your doctor right away if you experience worsening heart problems, chest pain, upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, dark urine, or jaundice.

It’s important to take mexiletine on a regular schedule; missing a dose can be dangerous because it may cause your heart condition to worsen. If you do miss a dose, take it right away once you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, call your doctor to find out what to do.

Store this medication in a tightly-sealed container at room temperature, out of the reach of children and pets. Don’t expose the mexiletine drug to high heat, moisture, or bright light.

Overdosing on mexiletine can be very dangerous and may lead to a worsening of your irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, nausea, seizures, or loss of consciousness. If you or someone in your home has overdosed on this medication, get emergency medical help.

Warnings

Mexiletine can cause dizziness or blurred vision, so don’t drive or operate heavy machinery until you feel you can do so safely. Limit your consumption of alcoholic beverages, as alcohol may make certain side effects worse. Your doctor may recommend that you stay in the hospital for monitoring after receiving your first dose of mexiletine to make sure the medication is safe for you.

Brand Names

Mexiletine is the generic form of Mexitil. There are no other equivalent brand names. HelpRx has coupons for both mexiletine and Mexitil, so you should be able to save at the pharmacy no matter what form your doctor prescribes.
