Microgestin Fe Information:

What is Microgestin Fe?

Ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone, also known as Microgestin Fe, is an oral birth control that contains a combination of female hormones that work to prevent ovulation. Microgestin causes changes in a female’s cervical mucus and uterine lining. By doing this, Microgestin makes it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach. Microgestin is used as contraception for the prevention of pregnancy, but also is often used to treat severe acne as well as relief symptoms brought on by premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

How do I take Microgestin Fe?

Though there are multiple brand and generic forms, Microgestin typically comes in packets of 21, 28, or 91 tablets and are taken orally once daily, every day at the same time for effectiveness. Microgestin should be taken with food or dairy to avoid stomach upset.

Before taking Microgestin Fe, tell your doctor if:

  • You have allergies to Microgestin, progestin, or estrogen.
  • You have allergies to any other medications.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications.
  • You have used oral contraceptives in the past and the side effects experienced, if any.
  • You have a history of blood clots.
  • You have experienced a stroke/mini-stroke.
  • You have heart disease, high blood pressure, or pain in chest.
  • You have a history of abnormal bleeding, adrenal insufficiency, kidney disease, breast cancer, migraines, or gallbladder disease.
  • You experience excessive bloating/weight gain during menstruation.
  • You are pregnant, have been pregnant, or may be pregnant.
  • You are breast-feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking Microgestin Fe?

It is important to tell the prescribing doctor if you experience any of these side effects:

Nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps or bloating, diarrhea, constipation, swelling of gum tissue, increased or decreased appetite, weight gain or loss, brown or black skin patches, increased acne, hair growth in unusual places, bleeding or spotting between periods, changes in menstrual flow, painful or missed periods, breast tenderness, enlargement, or discharge, swelling, redness, irritation, burning, or itching of the vagina, or white vaginal discharge.

Serious side effects that require contacting a doctor immediately include: Severe vomiting, headaches, problems with speech, dizziness or faintness, weakness or numbness of a limb, chest pain or heaviness, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, leg pain, partial or complete loss of vision, double vision, bulging eyes, stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, loss of appetite, fatigue, dark-colored urine, light-colored stool, swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs, depression, mood swings, unusual bleeding, rash, or extensive menstrual bleeding lasting more than 7 days.

What if I forget to take a dose of Microgestin Fe?

If you miss doses of Microgestin Fe, there is a chance you will not be protected from pregnancy. A backup method of birth control should be used for 7 to 9 days following. Each brand of oral contraceptives comes with specific directions to follow for a missed dose. Read the directions that came with the oral contraceptive and if there is any question, contact the prescribing doctor or pharmacist.

How do I store Microgestin Fe?

Microgestin Fe birth control should be kept in the packet it came in, closed, and out of reach of children. Avoid storing in a place with excess heat and moisture and discard any expired or no longer needed medication.

What happens if I overdose on Microgestin Fe?

If overdose is suspected, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, or is experiencing symptoms like nausea and unwarranted vaginal bleeding, call 911.

Warnings

Cigarette smoking while taking Microgestin Fe does increase the risk of side effects including heart attacks, blood clots, and strokes. The risk is even higher for women over 35 years of age and heavy smokers.

Oral contraceptives may increase the chances of developing liver tumors. Though these tumors are not cancerous, they can burst and cause serious bleeding inside the body. Oral contraceptives may also increase the chance of developing breast or liver cancer, heart attack, stroke, or a blood clot.
