What is morphine sulfate ER?

Morphine Sulfate ER is an opiate analgesic drug.  It is an extended release version of morphine sulfate. Morphine sulfate is an agonist at the mu-opioid. An agonist is a drug or chemical substance capable of activating a receptor to induce a full or partial physiological response.  Morphine sulfate works by activating the opiate receptors in the brain and blocking pain signals.  

How do I take morphine sulfate ER?

Morphine sulfate ER it taken in tablet form.  They should be swallowed whole and not crushed, dissolved or chewed.  Take each dose at the same time every day. Tablets are taken once or twice daily depending on the prescription.  Chewing, dissolving, or crushing extended release tablets leads to rapid release and absorption of a potentially fatal dose of morphine.

Before taking morphine sulfate ER, tell your doctor if:

  • You have bronchial asthma.
  • You have respiratory depression.
  • You have a hypersensitivity to morphine or other opiates.

In most cases, a prescription for morphine sulfate ER will only be given after a patient has been cleared and has been using a single release morphine sulfate or other opioid.  An opioid tolerance that has been managed and is stable should be established prior to taking morphine sulfate ER.  

What are the possible side effects of taking morphine sulfate ER?

The possible side effects of taking morphine sulfate ER are significant. 

Constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, vomiting, sweating, dysphoria, and euphoria. 

Less frequent but more severe side effects can occur.  The central nervous system can be negatively impacted, resulting in headaches, agitation, tremors, seizures and or insomnia.  The user might experience dry mouth, dyspepsia, and or develop skin rashes. 

 

What if I forget to take a dose of morphine sulfate ER?

If you miss a dose, take morphine sulfate ER as soon as possible and then take your next dose 8-12 hours later as directed by your health care provider.  If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take more than 1 dose in 8 hours.

How do I store morphine sulfate ER?

Since morphine sulfate ER is a controlled substance appropriate measures should be taken to keep the tablets from being taken by anyone other than the patient.  Morphine sulfate ER should be stored at 77 degrees.   The tablets are tolerant of temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

What happens if I overdose on morphine sulfate ER?

Signs of morphine overdose include cold, clammy, or bluish skin, small pupils, low body temperature, depressed breathing, severe drowsiness, vertigo, confusion, seizures, and coma. Get emergency treatment immediately. Overdosing on morphine sulfate ER can cause fatal breathing problems.

ABUSE POTENTIAL

Morphine sulfate ER contains is a Schedule II controlled substance with an abuse liability similar to other opioid agonists, legal or illicit. The risk for opioid abuse is increased in patients with a personal or family history of substance abuse (including drug or alcohol abuse or addiction) or mental illness (e.g., major depressive disorder).

LIFE-THREATENING RESPIRATORY DEPRESSION

Proper dosing and titration are essential and morphine sulfate extended-release tablets should only be prescribed by healthcare professionals who are knowledgeable in the use of potent opioids for the management of chronic pain.  Monitor for respiratory depression, especially during initiation of morphine sulfate extended-release tablets or following a dose increase.  Instruct patients to swallow morphine sulfate extended-release tablets whole.  Crushing, dissolving, or chewing the tablet can cause rapid release and absorption of a potentially fatal dose of morphine.

ACCIDENTAL EXPOSURE

Accidental ingestion of morphine sulfate extended-release tablets, especially in children, can result in a fatal overdose of morphine
