Mycophenolate Mofetil Information:

What is mycophenolate mofetil?

Mycophenolate mofetil is a type of antirejection medication called an immunosuppressant. It’s prescribed to patients who have received a kidney, heart, or liver transplant, including children who have had a kidney transplant. It is usually prescribed with other medications (cyclosporine and corticosteroids) in order to keep the body functioning as normally as possible while preventing it from attacking the new organ as a foreign object.

How do I take mycophenolate mofetil?

Get mycophenolate mofetil at a reduced price with our printable coupons. Always follow your doctor and pharmacists directions explicitly, and do not discontinue your medication unless instructed to do so by your doctor. Take your medication on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. Take mycophenolate mofetil as prescribed, which may be one or two times daily depending on your age and what kind of transplant you’ve received.

Before taking mycophenolate mofetil, tell your doctor if:

  • You’re taking or plan to take contraception.
  • You plan to become pregnant or are currently breastfeeding.
  • You have any active infections or you have recently recovered from an infection.
  • You need or plan to take vaccinations.
  • You have digestive problems such as ulcers.
  • You’re taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, supplements or vitamins as there could be serious interactions.
  • You have a history of renal impairment.
  • You have Phenylketonuria (PKU, a genetic disorder that affects the ability to break down certain amino acids).
  • You have any rare inherited deficiencies such as hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl-transferase (HGPRT), Lesch-Nyhan, or Kelley-Seegmiller syndrome.

What are the possible side effects of taking mycophenolate mofetil?

There are some very major side effects associated with mycophenolate mofetil, including: increased risk of miscarriage or birth defects, increased risk of fungal infections, increased risk of serious infections that could result in death or interfere with your transplanted organ (e.g., Hepatitus B/C, BK), risk of a brain infection called Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML - confusion, problems thinking, muscle weakness on one side of your body or inability to control your muscles), low blood cell counts, stomach or intestinal bleeding, sepsis, diarrhea. If you experience any of these side effects, do NOT stop taking your medication and contact your doctor immediately.

Other side effects include: stomach pain and vomiting, high blood pressure, swelling in the legs or feet, fever, sore throat, respiratory tract infections.

What if I forget to take a dose of mycophenolate mofetil?

Take your normal amount of medication as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time to take your next dose. Do not take 2 doses at the same time. If you’re unsure about what to do for any reason, call your doctor or pharmacist as too much or too little can be harmful.

How do I store mycophenolate mofetil?

Mycophenolate mofetil tablets, pills and oral suspensions should be stored at room temperature. Oral suspensions can also be stored in the refrigerator (do not freeze), and should only ever be kept for as many as 60 days. Always keep your mycophenolate mofetil containers closed tightly and away from children.

What happens if I overdose on mycophenolate mofetil?
