Mycophenolate Mofetil Information:

What is mycophenolate mofetil?

Mycophenolate mofetil is a type of antirejection medication called an immunosuppressant. It’s prescribed to patients who have received a kidney, heart, or liver transplant, including children who have had a kidney transplant. It is usually prescribed with other medications (cyclosporine and corticosteroids) in order to keep the body functioning as normally as possible while preventing it from attacking the new organ as a foreign object.

Take your medication on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating. Take mycophenolate mofetil as prescribed, which may be one or two times daily depending on your age and what kind of transplant you’ve received.

Before taking mycophenolate mofetil, tell your doctor if:

  • You’re taking or plan to take contraception.
  • You plan to become pregnant or are currently breastfeeding.
  • You have any active infections or you have recently recovered from an infection.
  • You need or plan to take vaccinations.
  • You have digestive problems such as ulcers.
  • You’re taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, supplements or vitamins as there could be serious interactions.
  • You have a history of renal impairment.
  • You have Phenylketonuria (PKU, a genetic disorder that affects the ability to break down certain amino acids).
  • You have any rare inherited deficiencies such as hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl-transferase (HGPRT), Lesch-Nyhan, or Kelley-Seegmiller syndrome.
