What is naproxen sodium?
Naproxen sodium is used to as a pain killer. It is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by inhibiting enzymes. Naproxen sodium is a propionic acid derivative. It is a white, crystalline solid that is freely soluble in water
How do I take naproxen sodium?
Naproxen sodium comes as a tablet. It is typically taken orally twice daily. Available in 220, 250, 375, or 500mg doses. This drug should be taken with a meal, milk or antacids to minimize adverse gastrointestinal effects.
Before taking naproxen sodium, tell your doctor if:
- You have a history of stomach bleeding.
- You have frequent heartburn.
- You have high blood pressure, heart disease, liver cirrhosis, or kidney disease.
- You are taking blood thinners.
- You have asthma.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication.
What are the possible side effects of taking naproxen sodium?
The most common side effects of taking naproxen sodium are headaches, dyspepsia and flu-like symptoms. Gastrointestinal problems, anemia, respiratory and renal problems may also occur. Other side effects include:
- belching
- bruising
- difficult or labored breathing
- feeling of indigestion
- itching skin
- large, flat, blue, or purplish patches in the skin
- pain in the chest below the breastbone
- shortness of breath
- skin eruptions
- stomach pain
- swelling
- tightness in the chest

What if I forget to take a dose of naproxen sodium?
Naproxen sodium is taken when needed. However if there is a dosing schedule, use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double up the amount taken after a mixed dose.
How do I store naproxen sodium?
Naproxen sodium should be stored at 68-77 degrees. High humidity and excessive heat above 104 degrees should be avoided.
What happens if I overdose on naproxen sodium?
An overdose of naproxen sodium can cause drowsiness, indigestion, heartburn, nausea or vomiting. Monitoring and managing symptomatic and supportive care should occur following an overdose. There are no specific remedies.
Warnings
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which include naproxen sodium, on rare occasions increase the risk for a heart attack or stroke. The risk is greater if you have heart disease, or increased risk of heart disease. If you smoke, have high blood pressure or diabetes you have an increased risk of heart disease. Naproxen sodium may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin, enoxaparin or dabigatran among other medicine.
