Natpara Information:

Natpara is a synthetic form of parathyroid hormone, a substance that occurs naturally in the body. It is used, along with calcium and Vitamin D, to treat hypocalcemia in individuals with low levels of parathyroid hormone. Natpara is a specialty drug, available only by prescription to those who are registered in the program and have been made aware of the risks associated with taking this medication.

Natpara is administered via subcutaneous injection using a specialized injector pen. Prior to first use, your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist will demonstrate the proper technique for preparing and using the pen. The dosage strength and frequency of dosing will be determined by your doctor. Each cartridge contains enough medicine for fourteen uses; dispose of the cartridge after this, even if there is medication remaining in it. Follow the dosing instructions exactly, and ask your healthcare provider to explain anything you do not understand.

Before taking Natpara, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to parathyroid hormone or any of the ingredients in the Natpara drug
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking digoxin or alendronate
  • You have, or have had, Paget’s disease, bone cancer, or any bone disorder
  • You have high levels of calcium or alkaline phosphatase in your blood
  • You have undergone radiation treatment

Some patients have reported side effects after taking Natpara. Symptoms such as mild nausea, diarrhea, joint pain, headache, or vomiting should be monitored if they appear and reported if they persist or worsen. Severe side effects such as signs of an allergic reaction, symptoms of high or low calcium levels, bone pain, or numb or tingling skin require immediate medical attention.

If you forget to take a dose of Natpara, do so as soon as you remember and are able, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In this situation, skip the one missed and maintain the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount taken or alter the dosing regimen. If you miss more than one dose, contact your healthcare provider.

Keep Natpara cartridges under refrigeration and out of the reach of children; do not allow them to freeze. After 14 days, dispose of any unused medication remaining in an opened cartridge. Dispose of any expired cartridges according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

If an overdose of Natpara occurs, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or call Emergency Services at 911 for help.

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Natpara. This medication may increase the risk for bone cancer.

Natpara is a proprietary formulation of the parathyroid hormone and is not available under any other brand. At HelpRx, a Natpara cost-cutting coupon is available and can be used to save you as much as 75% at pharmacies that carry this medication.
