Nifedipine Er Information:

What is Nifedipine?

Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker that works to lower high blood pressure and treat angina. Nifedipine ER is the extended release version of this medication. By relaxing the heart muscle and arteries, it makes it easier for oxygen to flow to the heart, reducing painful breathing and blood pressure. It is especially prescribed for angina treatment. It is available in both immediate and extended release varieties, depending on the severity and type of pain.

How do I take Nifedipine?

Nifedipine is administered as a pill and is prescribed in different doses depending on whether it is taken for immediate or sustained relief. Immediate release nifedipine is prescribed in low dosages, generally 10 mg, taken three times daily. Nifedipine ER is taken in higher concentrations once daily. Do not crush or chew nifedipine ER tablets or capsules. Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Before taking nifedipine, tell your doctor if:

  • You have any allergies to medications.
  • You have unusual heart rhythms
  • You have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, heart failure, or narrowing of any part of the stomach or intestines.
  • You are pregnant or may become pregnant while on this medication or are breast-feeding.
  • The medication is known to pass into breast milk.
  • You are taking any other medications, especially Beta Blockers.
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking nifedipine before undergoing surgery.

What are the possible side effects of taking Nifedipine?

Common side effects of taking nifedipine are dizziness, flushing, weakness, swelling of the hands or feet, and headache. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Serious side effects can occur. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience fainting or fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeat. If you experience vision changes, it could be a sign of a serious side effect, so contact your doctor. Nifedipine is known to lower reaction times, so do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you. While on this medication, have your blood pressure regularly monitored.

What if I forget to take a dose of nifedipine?

If you miss a dose of nifedipine, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is close to the next scheduled dose, skipped the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule. Do not take a double dose.

How do I store nifedipine?

Store nifedipine in a sealed container at room temperature away from light and humidity. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not flush extra or expired medication, but dispose of them as instructed by a doctor.

What happens if I overdose on nifedipine?

If you suspect an overdose of nifedipine contact a poison control center or medical professional immediately. Symptoms can include intense dizziness, pounding heartbeats, nausea, and vomiting.

Warnings

Discuss with your doctor if you have any heart conditions before taking nifedipine. Talk to your doctor if you have kidney, heart, or liver problems before beginning nifedipine. Nifedipine is known to have severe reactions with other medications, so discuss all current medications, vitamins, and supplements with your doctor prior to beginning taking nifedipine. Keep a list of your current medications on you at all times in case of emergency.
