Omnitrope Information:

What is Omnitrope?

Omnitrope is a synthetic growth hormone that helps bones and muscles develop. It may be given to children or adults who lack natural growth hormone due to a condition such as Turner syndrome or Prader-Willi syndrome.

How do I use Omnitrope?

Your doctor should show you how to inject Omnitrope into a muscle; pay attention to all dosage instructions and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you still have questions about how to use this medication. Prepare each dose immediately before you plan to give an injection rather than preparing them in advance. Do not shake the medication bottle, since this can ruin the medicine. Dispose of used needles and syringes in puncture-proof containers.

Before using Omnitrope, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this drug (somatropin) or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
  • You have complications from lung failure, a recent surgery, injury, or medical trauma
  • You are overweight or have breathing problems due to Prader-Willi syndrome
  • You have diabetes with or without complications
  • You have or have had cancer
  • You have ever had radiation treatment
  • You have a history of head trauma or a brain tumor
  • You have a pituitary gland or thyroid disorder
  • You have scoliosis (a curved spine)
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of using Omnitrope?

Omnitrope may cause some skin irritation at the injection site. Other common side effects include headache, muscle or joint pain, and sudden weight gain. If any of these side effects last a long time or become bothersome, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor right away if you have any breathing problems, vision changes or eye pain, numbness or tingling in your hands or wrists, knee or hip pain, severe stomach pain, increased thirst, dry mouth, drowsiness, or weight loss.

What if I forget to use a dose of Omnitrope?

Inject the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one. If you miss more than three doses in a row, call your doctor to find out what to do.

How do I store Omnitrope?

Keep Omnitrope in a tightly sealed container out of reach of children and pets when you’re not using it. Store it at room temperature, away from bright light and moisture. If you notice the medicine has changed colors or has particles floating in it, or if it is passed the expiration date on the label, throw it away. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of Omnitrope safely if you are unsure how to do so.

What happens if I overdose on Omnitrope?

Using more Omnitrope than prescribed on a regular basis may lead to excessive growth. Overdosing on this synthetic growth hormone can cause headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, headache, weakness, tremors, cold sweats, increased sweating, or a fast heartbeat. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, go to the nearest emergency room or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

If you are using steroids or diabetes medications, your dosage may need to be adjusted when you start Omnitrope. Do not use disposable needles or syringes more than once when administering this medication. Keep all doctor’s appointments while undergoing this treatment; your healthcare provider will likely need to perform frequent blood tests.
