Ondansetron HCL Information:

Ondansetron HCl is a serotonin antagonist. It helps prevent cancer treatment-related nausea by blocking the action of a certain neurotransmitter (serotonin).

Take ondansetron HCl with plenty of water. Your doctor will tell you when to take this medication; most patients will need to take it within 30 minutes of chemotherapy, within an hour of surgery, or within 1 to 2 hours of radiation treatment to prevent nausea.

Before taking ondansetron HCl, tell your doctor if:

· You have any food or drug allergies

· You are taking any other medications, especially Apokyn

· You have any heart problems (such as heart failure or long QT syndrome)

· You have liver disease

· You have an electrolyte imbalance

· You have a stomach or intestinal blockage

· You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

Ondansetron HCl may cause drowsiness, headache, diarrhea, or constipation. Contact your doctor right away if you experience stomach pain, muscle spasms, or vision changes. Get emergency medical help if you experience chest pain, severe dizziness, an irregular heart rate, fainting, hallucinations, coordination problems, severe nausea and vomiting, muscle tics, an unexplained fever, or unusual mood change.

Take the forgotten dose as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose. If you’re taking this medication as needed and forget to take a dose before your scheduled chemotherapy or radiation, ask your doctor what to do.

Store your ondansetron HCl tablets at room temperature or in a refrigerator. Keep your medication away from light and moisture, and as with all prescription drugs, store it out of reach of children and pets. Talk to your pharmacist if you’re unsure how to dispose of unused or expired tablets.

Overdosing on ondansetron HCl may cause severe constipation, lightheadedness, sudden vision loss, or fainting. Go to the nearest emergency room if you or someone in your home is exhibiting signs of an overdose.

Warnings

Ondansetron HCl may make you dizzy or drowsy, so don’t drive or perform other activities that require alertness until you know you can do so safely.
