What is Orapred ODT?
Orapred ODT is a corticosteroid medication that is used to treat a variety of conditions, including asthma, dermatitis, allergies, hypersensitity reactions, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, COPD, MS and many other conditions. Orapred contains prednisolone which works by reducing inflammation.
How do I take Orapred ODT?
How much and how long you take Orapred ODT will depend on your weight and your condition. Some patients may only need to take this drug for a few days while others will need long-term treatment. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions and finish the course of treatment prescribed, even if you feel better.
Before taking Orapred ODT, tell your doctor if:
- You have any allergies.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, especially NSAIDs, blood thinners, antifungals and antivirals.
- You have ever had any blood clots or bleeding problems.
- You have osteoporosis.
- You have diabetes.
- You have high blood pressure, heart problems or you’ve recently had a heart attack.
- You have glaucoma or cataracts.
- You have recently had an infection or currently have one.
- You’ve ever had kidney or liver disease.
- You have any intestinal disorders or problems.
- You have recently had or are going to get a vaccine.
- You have seizures.
- You regularly drink alcohol.
What are the possible side effects of taking Orapred ODT?
Possible side effects from taking Orapred ODT include heartburn, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, increased perspiration, acne, trouble sleeping and changes in appetite. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Other more serious side effect that you should address right away include high blood sugar, infections, sore throat, white patches on the inside of your mouth, mood swings, menstrual changes, bone or joint pain, puffy face, swelling of the hands, feet or ankles; vision changes, fast or irregular heartbeat, unusual bleeding, severe vomiting, and unusual hair growth.
What if I forget to take a dose of Orapred ODT?
If you miss a dose of Orapred ODT, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular course of treatment. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Orapred ODT?
Store Orapred ODT tightly closed in its container or packaging. Keep it at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit and protect it from light and moisture. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Orapred ODT?
Effects of overdose on Orapred ODT have not been reported. Overuse may result in abnormal fat deposits, fluid retention, weight gain, excessive appetite, dry skin, elevated blood pressure, hair loss, infections, osteoporosis, peptic ulcers, changes in menstruation, ‘moon face’ or rounded cheeks, hypokalemia and mood changes. If you think you are using too much of this medication, talk to your doctor as soon as possible. If someone accidentally ingests a large quantity of this medication, consult the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Taking steroids such as Orapred ODT can increase your chances of getting an infection, especially if taken for the long-term. This is why it is dangerous to get a vaccine while taking this medication. Corticosteroids can cause brittle bones, especially in older adults. Limit alcohol consumption and NSAID medications while taking Orapred; these can increase your chances of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Brand Names
The generic name for Orapred ODT is prednisolone. The generic version is also available as a disintegrating tablet and an oral solution.
