Ortho-Novum Information:
What is Ortho-Novum?
Ortho-Novum is an oral contraceptive containing two female hormones, ethinyl estradiol (estrogen) and norethindrone (progestin). The hormones prevent ovulation as well as causing changes to the cervical mucus and uterine lining to prevent sperm from reaching the uterus and to make it harder for a fertilized egg to attach itself to the uterine wall.
How do I take Ortho-Novum?
Ortho-Novum is an oral contraceptive in pill form that is taken daily, with water, and with or without food. It is dispensed in a package containing 28 pills; 21 of them are active, while the remaining 7 are inactive and serve as reminder pills to help maintain the dosing schedule. To establish the dosing cycle, take the first active pill on the first Sunday following the beginning of menstruation; if that day is Sunday, take the first pill on that day. Take one active pill daily for 21 days, then one inactive pill for the next seven. At the conclusion of this cycle, begin a new one. For maximum protection against pregnancy Ortho-Novum must be taken at 24- hour intervals.
Before taking Ortho-Novum, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to ethinyl estradiol, norethindrone, or any of the ingredients in Ortho-Novum
- You are breastfeeding or think you may be pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Ortho-Novum?
Mild side effects, such as menstrual cycle changes, vaginal itching or discharge, weight change, swollen or tender breasts, problems with contact lenses, and changes to skin pigmentation have been reported by those taking Ortho-Novum. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Some severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention have also been reported. These include depression, disorientation, signs of an allergic reaction, chest pain, liver disease, increased severity of migraine headaches, missed periods, a breast lump, or vision, balance, or speech problems.
What if I forget to take a dose of Ortho-Novum?
If you forget to take an active Ortho-Novum pill, refer to the instructions that accompanied your prescription for complete information. In general, if you miss one active pill at any time during the first three weeks, take it as soon as you remember and maintain the regular dosing regimen. If you miss two active pills in the first two weeks, take two on the day you remember and two the next day, then resume the regular daily dosing. If more than two pills are missed in any week, consult your doctor. Use an alternative means of contraception for seven days after missing a pill.
How do I store Ortho-Novum?
Keep Ortho-Novum in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light. Ask your pharmacist or doctor about the proper disposal method for any expired or unused pills.
What happens if I overdose on Ortho-Novum?
Signs of an overdose of Ortho-Novum include vaginal bleeding and nausea. If you experience these, or other unusual reactions, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing, collapsed, or is otherwise incapacitated, call Emergency Services at 911.
