What is oxybutynin chloride ER?

Oxybutynin chloride is in the class of drugs known as muscarinic antagonists. They are antispasmodics and anticholinergics and help to control and relieve the symptoms of an overactive bladder (urgency, frequency, incontinence, leakage, and dysuria) or cystitis by relaxing the bladder muscles. Oxybutynin chloride ER is the extended release formulation of this medication.

How do I take oxybutynin chloride ER?

Oxybutynin chloride is available as a tablet or a syrup and is taken orally two to four times a day. Oxybutynin chloride ER is in tablet form and taken only once a day. Any formulations of this medicine should be taken at the same time every day.

Take the tablets with plenty of water. Do not crush, chew, or split the extended release tablet. To drink the syrup, use a measuring cup or a measured dosing spoon.

Continue taking this medication even if you are feeling well. Do not alter the dosage or stop taking it without your doctor’s permission and supervision.

Before taking oxybutynin chloride ER, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to oxybutynin chloride;
  • You are taking any medications or supplements;
  • You have any allergies;
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing;
  • You have, or have had, a bladder disease(s);
  • You have, or have had, ulcerative colitis;
  • You have internal bleeding;
  • You have glaucoma;
  • You have gastric retention, paralytic ileus, or related illnesses or conditions;
  • You have heart disease or coronary artery disease;
  • You have kidney disease;
  • You have an enlarged prostate gland;
  • You have an overactive thyroid.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and you should inform your physician of your complete medical history.

What are the possible side effects of taking oxybutynin chloride ER?

Several side effects have been observed in some who take oxybutynin chloride. These include back or joint pain, blurred vision, confusion, constipation, diarrhea, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, dizziness, drowsiness, dry eyes, nose, or skin, dry mouth, flushing, gas, headache, heartburn, nausea, nervousness, stomach pain, and swelling of the hands, arms, feet, ankles, or lower legs. Contact your physician if any of these persist or are severe.

Oxybutynin chloride may also cause allergic reactions. Contact your physician immediately if you experience a rash, hives, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, are hoarse, have a rapid or irregular heartbeat, or you experience frequent, urgent, or painful urination.

What if I forget to take a dose of oxybutynin chloride ER?

If you are taking oxybutynin chloride in either the tablet or syrup form and you miss a dose, take it as soon as your remember. However, if the time for the next regularly scheduled dose is near, skip the missed dose and resume the normal schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

For oxybutynin chloride ER, if it is eight hours or more until the next scheduled dose, take the missed one. However, if it is within eight hours until the next dose, skip the missed dose. Take the regular scheduled dose at its proper time and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

How do I store oxybutynin chloride ER?

Store oxybutynin chloride and oxybutynin chloride er, whether in syrup or tablet form, in their original containers, out of the reach of children, and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Speak with your pharmacist regarding the disposal of any extra or expired medications.

What happens if I overdose on oxybutynin chloride ER?

If the patient takes an overdose of oxybutynin chloride, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately. If he or she has collapsed or has stopped breathing call emergency services at 911. There are several indicators of an overdose including uncontrollable shaking of any part of the body, seizures, irritability, restlessness or agitation, vomiting, difficulty breathing, difficulty moving, inability to urinate, hallucinations, and vomiting, among others.

Warnings

Oxybutynin chloride may cause dizziness, blurred vision, or make you drowsy; therefore, do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you are sure of how it affects you. This medication may increase the risk of heatstroke. Discuss with your doctor the possible effects of this medication with grapefruit or grapefruit juice; he or she may recommend dietary adjustments. This medication will not cure your condition; continue to take it, regardless of how you feel, until otherwise recommended by your physician.
