Parcopa Information:

What is Parcopa?

Parcopa contains two active ingredients: carbidopa and levodopa. Medications with these two ingredients are commonly prescribed to treat Parkinson’s because they work together to increase the amount of dopamine in the brain. Parkinson’s is believed to occur when levels of dopamine neurons are low. It’s important to note that the extended-release drug Parcopa can successfully treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s, but it cannot cure the disease.

How do I take Parcopa?

Take Parcopa by mouth with or without food, on the schedule your doctor has prescribed. Let the tablet dissolve in your mouth without chewing. Swallow several times while the tablet is dissolving, but do not swallow the tablet whole. Take Parcopa at regular intervals to keep the amount of medicine in your body consistent. Do not suddenly stop taking the medication, as this could lead to withdrawal symptoms.

Before taking Parcopa, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially other medications containing levodopa
  • You have used an MAO inhibitor within the past two weeks
  • You have glaucoma
  • You have high blood pressure or a history of heart problems
  • You have kidney or liver disease
  • You have a hormonal disorder
  • You have a stomach or intestinal ulcer
  • You have a breathing disorder, such as asthma
  • You have phenylketonuria (PKU)
  • You have a history of mental illness
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Parcopa?

Like all prescription drugs, Parcopa may cause certain side effects. Commonly reported side effects include nausea, muscle contractions, and jerky muscle movements. Less common but more serious side effects may include worsening Parkinson’s symptoms, unusual mood changes or suicidal thoughts, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, high fever, an irregular heart rate, or severe dizziness. If you have any of these severe side effects, or if you have any other adverse effects that concern you, contact your doctor immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of Parcopa?

It is important to take Parcopa at regular intervals, but if you do forget, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule.

How do I store Parcopa?

Keep Parcopa in a tightly sealed container out of reach of any children or pets in your home. Store it at room temperature, away from bright light and moisture.

What happens if I overdose on Parcopa?

If you are concerned that you or someone in your household has overdosed on the Parcopa drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.

If you are just starting to take Parcopa, it may take several weeks for the medication to become effective. If your symptoms don’t improve after several weeks, or if the medication seems to wear off quickly between doses, tell your doctor. Avoid iron supplements and a high-protein diet while taking Parcopa, as these things can make it more difficulty for your body to absorb the medicine. Be careful standing from a sitting or lying position, since Parcopa can cause dizziness. You should avoid driving and performing other tasks that require alertness until you know how the medication affects you.

Brand Names

Parcopa is a brand name drug containing a combination of carbidopa and levodopa. Other carbidopa/levodopa drugs include Rytary, Sinemet, and Sinemet CR.
