Pentasa Information:

What is Pentasa?

Pentasa is an anti-inflammatory drug primarily used to treat ulcerative colitis and also sometimes prescribed to treat Crohn’s disease (a chronic inflammatory bowel disease). When used for ulcerative colitis, it helps reduce symptoms including stomach pain, rectal bleeding, and diarrhea. As an anti-inflammatory drug, it helps to reduce swelling of the colon.

How do I take Pentasa?

The Pentasa drug comes as a capsule that can be taken with or without food. You should not chew or break this capsule; it needs to be swallowed whole in order for the medicine to be effective. Most patients are instructed to take this medication 4 times a day, but defer to your doctor if he or she puts you on a different dosing schedule.

Before taking Pentasa, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications, especially any other aminosalicylates or sulfasalazine
  • You have any other known allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications
  • You have a medical history of kidney or liver disease
  • You have ever had a stomach blockage
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Pentasa?

Although serious Pentasa drug side effects are uncommon, it is possible to experience headache, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea when taking this medicine. If these side effects persist or worsen, alert your doctor. If you experience any rare but serious side effects, including worsening symptoms of ulcerative colitis, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, yellowing eyes or skin, difficulty breathing, or chest pain, tell your doctor immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of Pentasa?

If you miss a dose, it is alright to take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, you should never double your dose to catch up. If it is almost time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosing schedule.

How do I store Pentasa?

Keep the Pentasa drug in a tightly sealed container, away from light and moisture. Do not keep it in the bathroom or anywhere that children or pets can reach it. If your medication expires or you no longer need it, talk to your pharmacist about how to safely dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on Pentasa?

Overdosing on Pentasa can lead to confusion, rapid breathing, ringing in the ears, and seizures. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately. If someone in your household has overdosed and is having a seizure or has lost consciousness, call 911.

Warnings

Pentasa may impair renal function in patients who have preexisting renal disease, increased BUN or serum creatinine, or proteinuria. If you have any of these conditions, tell your doctor; if he or she decides that prescribing Pentasa is still the best course of action, you will need to be carefully monitored during the first phase of treatment.
