Periogard Information:
Periogard is a mouthwash (oral rinse) that contains the active ingredient chlorhexidine gluconate, which acts as a germicide safe for use in the oral cavity. Its antimicrobial activity increases in effectiveness with regular use. Gums affected by gingivitis usually receive a reduction in swelling, redness, and bleeding. However, this medication cannot treat all types of gingivitis. It should be used only for the conditions it is prescribed.
Rinse the mouth with chlorhexidine gluconate twice a day following a thorough teeth brushing. Measure your dose with the provided cup, then pour it into your mouth. Do not swallow the mouthwash. Swish it around for at least 30 seconds, then spit it out. Do not dilute the rinse with water or combine with other mouthwashes afterward. Although this medicine will likely leave an unpleasant taste, you must not rinse away the medication or it will not be effective.
Before taking Periogard, tell your doctor if:
· You have periodontal disease
· You are pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant
· You have known allergies to food, medicine, or any other substances
· You are allergic to chlorhexidine gluconate
Patients who use Periogard have reported common side effects, including irritation, dry mouth, unpleasant taste in the mouth, or decreased sense of taste. More serious side effects, which include white patches or sores inside the mouth or lips, ulcers, or swelling of salivary glands, should be reported to your doctor immediately.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember to take it, but do not take it before brushing your teeth. Skip the dose you missed if it is already time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra mouthwash to make up for a missed dose.
Keep the Periogard container in a place that stays at room temperature all day. Avoid exposing this medication to excessive moisture or heat, as both can damage the active ingredient within.
You may overdose if you swallow this medication. Symptoms may include nausea, stomach pain, or a feeling of drunkenness. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or get to an emergency room as soon as you possibly can.
Warnings
Do not give this medication to teenagers or children without consulting a doctor. The chemicals contained within are harsh and could lead to severe chemical burns in young children. Do not stop taking this medication if you notice an improvement in symptoms. This medicine cannot treat viral or fungal infections, including cold sores, oral thrush, or canker sores.
