Perphenazine/amitriptyline is a combination medication prescribed to treat depression, anxiety, and agitation. It is also used to treat schizophrenia. Perphenazine is classified as a conventional antipsychotic that works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that works by increasing the substances the brain needs to maintain mental balance.

How do I take perphenazine/amitriptyline?

 

Perphenazine/amitriptyline pills are taken orally with water and without regard to food. The dosing schedule will depend on the strength of the medication, the condition being treated, and the medical profile of the patient. Take this medication exactly as it is prescribed and swallow the perphenazine/amitriptyline medicine whole; do not crush, split, or chew the pills. Do not take this medication for a period longer than is prescribed.

Before taking perphenazine/amitriptyline, tell your doctor if:

 

  • You are allergic to perphenazine, amitriptyline, or any of the ingredients in this medication

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

What are the possible side effects of taking perphenazine/amitriptyline?

 

Side effects have been reported by those who have taken the perphenazine/amitriptyline drug. Mild side effects may include appetite loss, blank facial expression, blurred vision, breast enlargement, breast milk production, change in skin color, constipation, diarrhea, problems with urination, sleep difficulties, dilated or constricted pupils, diminished sexual ability in men, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, excess saliva, paranoia, headache, missed menstrual periods, nausea, pale skin, restlessness, shuffling gait, stuffy nose, unusual dreams, uncontrollable movements, or vomiting. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Severe side effects have also been reported. These include arrhythmia, aural or visual hallucinations, bodily tremors, bradycardia, confusion, crushing chest pain, decreased thirst, dizziness, feeling faint, eye pain or discoloration, fainting, fever, fine, worm-like tongue movements, muscle spasms or stiffness, neck cramps, vision changes, seizures, signs of an allergic reaction, signs of infection, slow or difficult speech, sweating, tachycardia, tightness in the throat, uncontrollable face, mouth, or jaw movements; unusual bleeding or bruising, weak or numb arms or legs, or yellow skin or eyes. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these symptoms appear.

What if I forget to take a dose of perphenazine/amitriptyline?

 

If you forget to take your perphenazine/amitriptyline medicine, take it as soon as you remember and are able unless it is almost time for the next dose. In this case, skip the one missed and return to the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of perphenazine/amitriptyline pills taken or change how frequently you take the medication.
