Podofilox Information:
What is podofilox?
Podofilox is a keratolytic prescribed to treat and remove external genital and perianal warts; it does not cure them. It works by preventing the growth of wart cells.
How do I take podofilox?
Podofilox is a topical solution that is applied directly to the wart(s). The typical dosing pattern follows a seven-day cycle: twice daily for three consecutive days, followed by a four day interval during which it is not used. It may be used for up to four consecutive cycles or until the wart(s) disappear, whichever comes first. Wash and dry the affected area before application. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the medication. Apply podofilox only to the wart; avoid getting it on healthy skin. Do not allow this medication to come in contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, rectum, urethra, or vagina. Increasing the amount used does not improve its effectiveness.
Before using podofilox, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to podofilox or any of the ingredients in the solution;
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child;
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements; or
- You have, or have had, and STD.
What are the possible side effects of using podofilox?
Some people have reported side effects after using podofilox. Less severe symptoms include sleep problems, tender skin, an unpleasant skin odor, painful intercourse, or drying, blistering, bleeding, peeling, crusting, scarring, swelling, or irritation in the area where the medication applied. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), oozing or burning skin, or skin damage.
What if I forget to apply a dose of podofilox?
If you forget to apply your scheduled dose of podofilox, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount used or frequency of application to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store podofilox?
Keep podofilox tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the medication to freeze. Dispose of any unused quantity according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on podofilox?
Podofilox is for topical application only. If this medication is accidentally ingested or too much is applied, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of excessive application include seizures, nausea, confusion, vomiting, sores in the mouth, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, or numbness or tingling of the feet or hands.
Warnings
Podofilox is for topical application only; do not use this medication to treat genital or perianal warts that are inside the vagina, urinary tract, or rectum. This medication is flammable; do not use near an open flame. Do not use this medication on any skin growths or warts that have not been examined by your doctor. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using podofilox. Do not engage in sexual activity on the days you use this medication. Do not have unprotected sex while being treated with podofilox.
